LabRat, I'm not 100% sure myself, but I think we started out at 80 characters, then AOL readers complained it was cutting off at the margin. So we shortened the line length to 65 characters, and the complaining stopped. And so for consistency's sake, we've pretty much stayed at 65 characters.
