While flying home from England, a tanker leaking oil had waylaid Clark. After fixing the ship so no more oil seeped out, Superman took it to dry dock for repairs.
At least some people still accept Superman's help.

He assumes Lois will be given real power. Plus, he has no clue that her getting the job was delayed by Luthor negotiating for more concessions.
