I love this story and, like Jenn, I love the banter between Lois and Clark. It's so them!
Oh, and I love your reasoning on the girlfriend theory.
And even if 'you-who-will-not-be-remembered' did appear, it could still make sense.
It would explain Lois' intense dislike of Mayson, and even if Lois and Clark were seeing each other, I kinda think Lois might go through a period of skittishness, when she realized she was getting into real commitment. So maybe she backs off a bit... and that would also explain the introduction of the male version of those best forgotten.
