One more thought on the talking... Shadbolt said that the prisoner had talked in the beginning, but his attempts to communicate had already ceased by the time Shadbolt arrived a week later. But the surgery didn't occur until over 6 months later so the two aren't related?
Then that of course begs the question what other horrible things could the surgery have involved? *shudders*
