This is a misconception. The military's job (in the US, anyway) is to defend the nation. This means being ready and willing to kill the enemy should it become necessary, but with Superman in uniform flying around at the ready, few other countries would be willing to attack the US.
Terry, of course you are right. I should have said that Superman would not be
