Sue, this was wonderful and almost painful to read. Clark's trepidation *leapt* off the page, and Lois — oh, my heart just ached all over the place for her (for both of them!) as I read on.
But these three lines were like an emotional sucker-punch:
He shook his head and wished he had never started this conversation. There was no way he could tell her now. There was no way he could tell her later either.
