As for the glasses, I've seen the explanation about the glass being lead to remind Supes not to use his xray vision many times, but I've never seen the explanation of that being why the glasses were so big and heavy. I think that may have been what John was getting at, but I'm not sure. And as for the idea of Clara not wearing glasses, I think if you have her say she is wearing contacts now that it would work just fine. All you'd need is a very different hairstyle - or even color - and maybe different makeup.
