That should either be "he hadn't" or "he'd not", "he'd" is he had, so you are saying he had had not.

Oh, and the ':3' face I'm fond of using is just sort of a cute smiley. In my head I think of it as 'little cute guy'. I use it when I think someone/something else is cute and/or when I am trying to be cute /if that makes sense? The more extreme version of the face is x3 - for when something is SO CUTE OMG.
