I also have always believed that Perry knew Clark's secret. I didn't think he figured it out this quickly, but your story definitely made sense to me. I like that he instinctively understood the damage that would be done by revealing the secret, that he carefully weighed that factor against the public's right to know, and that he chose to actively protect Clark's secret without Clark knowing it. Really good story.
