I think the unfortunate thing is that given the industry's predilection towards sympathy votes, we'll never know whether he won it on merit or because he died. I haven't seen the movie so I've no idea whether his performance was deserving or not.

I have to agree with LoveLandC. I understand that Ledger died from an accidental overdose of prescription medication. I, too, have very little sympathy for the likes of Amy Winehouse, Pete Docherty et al, who take the extreme good fortune that life has handed them and flush it away with drugs and other harmful excesses. But Ledger doesn't seem to have been in this category.

ETA - I see that LoveLandC appears to have more up to date info than I have - I haven't been paying much attention to be honest - and that the verdict now appears to be that there was no overdose.
