It's funny... these lines (slightly altered, of course) could just as easily be canon Clark needing Lois to love him for himself and not Superman.
She needed someone to help her.
Someone whole. Someone human. Someone who would know instinctively what she needed.
And Clark wasn't that person.
I too hope Clark doesn't take this *noble* (lunkheaded, more like!) thought to heart... but I have a feeling he might... at least for a little while... just hope it's short lived.
