It depends. If I'm writing a story with any form of A-plot, I need to map it out so I can make sure everything fits together. But I no longer have the patience to write anything that resembles a long story. So I wait til I'm drunk off, oh, Robitussin for example.
That was completely the first time I winged it, and I loved every minute of it.
