I've heard decent stuff about openoffice. Supposedly, it's generic Office. All newer versions of that kind of stuff should open older files without any problems and, as others pointed out, there are workarounds for the opposite problem.
If you're happy with Office in general, I don't think it'd hurt to go ahead and try to install it.
And YIKES about the viruses! That's awful!
