I probably worded the passage poorly. It was supposed to be excluding his cousins and Hattie from those that teased him about his weight.

I know that sometimes cousins can be cruel to each other, but those associated with the Kent clan, because of the example that they set, are above that sort of thing.

If you go back and reread some of the earlier kids stories there are numerous mentions of the cousins being over.
