I was doing pretty good with comments months and months ago, but I seem to have started lurking again. I'm emerging now to confirm that someone besides Ann read this as potentially indicating that Clark was worried about physically hurting Lois:

It was sort of ambiguous, and I decided that probably wasn't what he meant (because if it was, he would be refusing to marry her), but I did read it that way at first.
