I would have suspected he would have preferred to hear it for the first time from a friend in private than on TV in front of many people. Talk about ripping the band-aide off...
In a previous part Catherine was struggling whether or not to tell Clark and she planned on doing so if Lana returned to Metropolis behaving as if nothing had happened. After all, Arthur had given her the picture as proof. Nonetheless, it was a very difficult position to be in. Who of us would want the job?
But unfortunately, Lana quite literally beat her to the punch.
