"I don't date," she told him with crisp finality. "Ever."

"I don't believe in love," she said flatly.

"You don't think there can be a 'happily ever after'?"

"I think 'happily ever after' is nothing more than something to stick on the end of the story when the writer has realised that the readers are within one flowery line of gagging on the unrelenting sentimentality."

"I think love is beautiful," Clark said. "Shane is always smiling, and Jane -"

"Of course, he's smiling now," Lois cut in. "But what about in five years' time when they're trying to juggle a home, a couple of kids, and two jobs, and neither can remember why they ever wanted to be married in the first place?"

"Some marriages are like that," Clark conceded, "but I don't think it has to be that way."

"But that's the point," Lois insisted. "There are no guarantees of forever, and without forever, it's an ultimately futile exercise. Futile. Expensive. Painful. Depressing."

"I would gladly risk it all for a woman I loved."
OK, she didn't specifically say she didn't want to be with him, but she described love as 'futile, expensive, painful, and depressing'.

Actually, he isn't misinterpreting her now so much as remembering what she told him just a few hours ago and trying to figure out how her actions/words now relate to what she said then. (I realise it was weeks ago for readers, but it was only last night for Clark.) It would be pretty arrogant and unClark-like to simply assume that because Lois has met him, she's changed all her views on love.

In working through her own demons, Lois has been sending Clark a lot of mixed messages - I don't date, I don't believe in love, let's have breakfast together, sit closer to me, kiss me, let's finish our date early to try to save a wedding I was scathing about.

Clark's just trying to get some clarity.

Leaving those two alone together just leads to distraction.
Yep. That's all part of the fun.

Lois? Freaking out? Surely you can't be serious! smile1 that you're enjoying the WAFF.

Laura You give great FDK, Laura.

I'd like to respond to a couple of things you said, but that would involve spoilers.

Thanks Vicki. I've told you privately that you're an amazing BR. Love the way you improve my stories.

Kathy Sorry you were DYING! And no, I've never known you to whine. wink

Just so you know, here's the plan.

1. Finish editing the final part. (This is more likely to happen if I can convince myself to stop tweaking Part 8.)

2. Send Part 9 to the BRs.

3. Do a final edit on Part 8.

4. Post Part 8.

I completely suck at estimates, but I'll try to post Part 8 by Saturday and Part 9 the middle of next week.

Thanks to everyone for your response to my story.

Corrina.
