Welcome to the boards! wave

That is an interesting (and scary) start. Queen Lois and king Lex? shock "Oh, dear" indeed! I'm glad Wells is there to fix things. Right? spider

Brighton is one of the few places I've actually visited while staying in England. I wonder how Lex managed to become king. Great job

But... Lois married Lex!? I guess she felt she didn't have a choice, stranded in the past and all, but... NOOOO!

How will Wells sort this out?

It's interesting that Lois realizes she loves Clark at such a critical moment. I wonder if that will affect things, or if she'll have forgotten about it in this new reality. And poor H.G. Wells, he never gets a moment of peace!
Quote
“White cliffs,” he whispered in awe. “It can only be my England. I’m home.”

There's no feeling quite like being home.
Quote
he thought for all that he had nudged the webs of time this way and that, maybe Nature had it all in hand and knew what she was doing with her broad brushstrokes of harmonious colours.

That's so beautiful!!!
Quote
This crash was just a blip, not even the strength of a butterfly’s wing, he told himself.

Great line.

I, too, really appreciated the allusion to a butterfly's wing. Apparently Herb needs to start reading some of the future's sci fi. smile

King Lex?! Married to Lois??! Oh heck no, this needs fixing ASAP! D:

Lex said such crazy things sometimes

I laughed out loud at this because YES and also because she has no idea of the extent of it.

Quote
The roar of the engines, in a low hum in the background before, fought with the lilting strains of the violin.

Looking back, this is such a great, foreboding detail!

Quote
A tenuous third option as thin as gossamer thread its way in: a romantic life she could have with Clark.

Love to see it!

Quote
he can’t have been expecting her to faint like some corseted damsel of old. Lex would hate that. Hell, she would hate that.

Also a great little hit: I feel like she's going to find out whether she hates it or not!

Quote
The violin strings screeched, turning into an almighty wail.

The whole transition of her mental reaction to the proposal and her realization that the plane is crashing is so great! Love the subtlety to it!

Quote
Herbert Wells rubbed the back of his head and readjusted his cracked glasses.

OH NO! He's supposed to be helping them! Not sending them off-course!

Quote
Incredibly, he and it had survived what was meant to be their final journey mostly intact.

Oh, no, final? I'd be so sad to see it go.

Quote
I wasn’t expecting a second journey, so, old friend,

Oh, I love the way he talks to it like a person. What a great choice.

Quote
the time machine teetered on the sheer drop of a cliff.

That's very dramatic and potentially very ominous!

Quote
As his tumultuous life hung quite literally on a cliff edge, he thought for all that he had nudged the webs of time this way and that, maybe Nature had it all in hand and knew what she was doing with her broad brushstrokes of harmonious colours.

This prose is so lush and poetic.

Quote
alterations with future technology had their advantages

lol

Quote
the caustic sound mixing with the stinging scent of salt, seaweed and vinegar.

So evocative!

Quote
the drowsy old Downs
in the summer sunshine?
Wow, are we actually quoting Meanwhile??? That is a DEEP CUT! So fantastic to get some of Wells' writing in a story about Wells! Love this!

Quote
it was darker, eerie, hiding as if ashamed between the sea and the Downs.

Well, that's ominous.

Quote
a Volks Electric Railway, no Daddy longlegs on iron girders transporting passengers along the coast

Wow, you really did your research on Wells! It's really great to see a place he spent so mcuh time through his eyes here.

Quote
ordered a beer and a pie

This is so delightfully of the period, lol.

Quote
Dandies, he marvelled.

FUN!

Quote
It’s not my clothes that are invisible, it’s my age.

This is so savvy; great detail.

Quote
the future was secure

It's like I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop!

Quote
An epilogue. This could be fun, he thought.

Oh, man, is he going to be wrong. This is such a fun set-up!

Really looking forward to the rest of this!

Four years.

Whaaat? shock Was there a time distortion? Did four years pass only in this reality, or in the original reality too?
Quote
It was no accident that this had happened at the precise moment he had proposed to her, he said: the Fates had been so sure that they should be together, they had whisked them to a place where they could rule, be the most powerful couple, be given the most lavish wedding with a whole nation cheering on their romance.

That really does sound like something Lex would say.
Quote
They fell from the sky in a giant metal bird.” He pointed to what looked like a mini crater in the area the public gardens should be. "If anything should tell you this country needs a monarchy with Divine Right, that should.”

A plausible justification for this whole situation, given the time period.

You describe the settings wonderfully. Well done! I'm looking forward to seeing how Lois gets home and also to seeing Clark.

The idea of Lois Lane trapped in 19th century England is hilarious. I loved your description of the feast. I believe I visited the place you described and it seemed like that prince was the English version of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. At least Wells is now there to help. Waiting for the next chapter.

Just catching up with this story!

Chapter 1:

I really liked the opening! Lois's POV made me think of how, for all that we see her as a strong and independent woman, Lois was only 26 - still such a young and impressionable age, especially with her lack of experience in dating! Lex's treatment would have reasonably gone to her head a little, and that's not a crime!

Love the description of the English coast ❤ I've never been. Someday, hopefully!

And the description of 1822 Brighton! Fascinating! Love the nostalgia that drips all over the text, and the Wells POV is so well done!

Oh dear oh dear oh dear indeed!!

Chapter 2:

I am very intrigued to see it is the same Lois and Lex from 1995! I thought it was the past gone wrong - but of course, something happened to their plane, didn't it?

Lois's insights on her situation, the past, and Lex are so fascinating to read!! Love that she's still thinking of Clark 😏

Pfft, right???

Quote
Lois Lane did not look like Lois Lane. Instead of a blocky one-colour suit, she was smothered in a riot of cream crinoline. Two women held up her hooped skirt as she walked stiffly down careful not to trip as she couldn’t see her feet nor the steps over the skirt. Not that she could look down for she carefully balanced a tower of ostrich feathers on her head. She looked like a doll over-dressed by a zealous child.

I'd love to have seen that all the same! She sounds pretty majestic!

Will be looking forward to the next chapter!!

At least Lois's new position makes the gold issue very convenient. grin Could this adventure with AltClark end up leading her to discover that Clark is Superman? I'm looking forward to seeing them together. And I hope the next chapter doesn't take too long! grovel grin
