Marks story as
KSaraSara

Because she can't help herself.

But that's not her way of doing m-dashs and ellipses. This cannot be Sara. There's also no heart listening.

And it's set in London during the Blitz. I trust Mary to be able to research the hell out of it, but would she change her m-dashing? She changed her sentence spacing, though. And the story is really long. Goes with

lovetvfan

because comparing it with Fried Mars Bars, it's the same punctuation style

I was hooked from start to finish! Read it all in one sitting. On the one hand the purple kryptonite makes me think of
BlueOwl
on the other hand the style is also similar to
Ksarasara
Need a moment to mull things over before I decide on a final guess.

This one took a while to get through but it was worth it. Hats off to the research that obviously went into some of the events in the story. It's a neat take on AltClark for sure! I like the idea of AltLois getting lost in time and the time period would be one that would be really interesting to see her in.

Hmm, as for who wrote it? KSarasara seems to be the popular guess and it definitely feels like something she would write...but maybe Kathryn84?

What a journey! At first I was a little meh because I don't like many alt-Clark stories. But as I kept reading, I quickly fell in love with the premise. And it was so well written. Every moment is just perfect. I love that Clark doesn't just buy the whole soul mates thing and that he's still figuring out his place in the world. And Lois having taken in a kid was great. Jamie is so sweet.
I'm kind of hoping for a sequel to check in and see how he's adapting to living in the future.
As for the author... it reminded me some of BlueOwl but there were of few things that made me think maybe not. I'm leaning more toward the popular guess of KSarasara.

Wow what a ride. This is so heart wrenching and my gut tightened every time the Germans dropped more bombs in them. The way you described all that devastation and fear, but also Lois' stubborn refusal to give up was done so well. The whole story made me feel so grateful that after everything that happened our people were able to move past it.

Even looking back it seems so unlikely.

A lot of little hints have me believe this was written by someone who grew up in Britain. I think this is the work of
lovetvfan

Ok, so first, I'll try to keep my notes coherent for this because LONDON DURING THE BLITZ??? I'm SUCH a sucker for this premise, and the story doesn't disappoint. I was up past three one night, tearing my way through to the ending in one go. It's so heart rending and I feel like it’s the SUCH A GREAT ENDING for alt-Clark, who has surely deserved it after all years of him getting often tragic and damaged Loises. But I loved this version of alt-Clark, and yes, the romance/emotional story, too. But it was the STRUCTURE of the thing overall that was so satisfying for me. In the LONDON BLITZ. Just hits all of my buttons. Ok, here we go:

PART 1

Quote
her feet sinking into deep green wetness as she scrambled to escape.
Love the word choice for verbs in this section but the ambiguity of the 'deep green wetness' somehow makes this WORSE; really evocative.

Quote
A rock. All this over a rock.
On nooooooo....

Quote
She knew there was nobody to help her. Nobody to save her.
This is particularly crushing because we know that there SHOULD be. And because we know he could get there, if only he knew where she was. So, doubly tragic.

Quote
The crack of the shot and then the rock exploding in her hands.
Oh, yikes.

Quote
But it was a dream.
🧐

Quote
Clark had never even met her and yet the news that she was alive had felt miraculous. Wondrous.
Awww

Quote
More than that – wherever he went he was cheered, welcomed and even loved.
This is a really great extension to the world building on the show, where everyone knew that alt-Clark was Superman, but we weren't entirely sure how that was going to go for him. But this sounds like it's working out overall.

Quote
He’d learned to compartmentalise his loneliness; to push it deep down until it became a low level ache inside – painful, but bearable.
...perfectly healthy.

Quote
Wells stood there, fist raised looking slightly flustered.
“Sorry,” Clark said somewhat sheepishly, standing back to let the small man enter.
Great interaction here, lol. I always love a flustered Wells.

Quote
Funny, being late, considering I have a time machine.” He chuckled.
THANK YOU! And yes, this is funny.

Quote
Or maybe he was stalling because he still had no idea what he would say to her.
Too cute!

Quote
“We have a genuine mystery on our hands,” Wells replied.
Love it!

Quote
“You can do this, Mr. Kent,” Wells said softly, placing a reassuring hand on his back. “In fact, you may be the only one who can.”
I think that this is the best version of Wells. He's not a hero, he's not really great in a fight or in a pinch, but he has a Lois Lane level of faith in people, and particularly in Clark. I know it's because he knows how this works out (or should), but he still uses his knowledge in a really kind, warm way.

Quote
And I refuse to assume that things will just magically fall into place because the universe supposedly says it should.
I love this for the character, in the obstacle that it gives him and but also in the meta aspect - because as a reader, I feel pretty confident that it will work out, lol.

Quote
And we’ll need a store that sells something that would be appropriate for the year 1941.
Aww... back when they had cotton clothes instead of mostly plastic blends. Can they take me shopping there, too? But earnrstly, shopping with Wells just feels delightfully absurd.

Quote
March 8th 1941
I re-read this date like 3 times because I was so surprised that you were going here. Great event to isolate.

Quote
council flat
This is when I started to think it was a British writer.

Quote
Was that what happened to his parents? Lois still didn’t know and he refused to talk about it.
Oh, nooooo.... I was wondering if this was why he was still in London all the way into 1941.

Quote
Now was not the time, especially since she knew that bear was the most important item he owned.
I loved the teddy bear is splashed across the story and how you it was used, from intro to nickname to mid-bombing location device. It's somehow more heart-rending to think that the teddy bear sees so many bombings - including the one that kills Jamie's parents and the one that nearly kills him. Really great metaphor for the effect of war on innocence. And, of course, I can't help but link Snowy to the bear that Clark wins for Lois in our primary Metropolis.

Quote
It had been six months since the air raids had begun, but they hadn’t gotten any less terrifying.
Yeah... he really needs to get her out of there. It's March, so this gets worse before it gets better.

Quote
It was as if a part of her was afraid that if she let go of him for even a second, she would lose him.
This is the most 'mom' sentence ever written.

Quote
He wasn’t hers, and yet he was.
She's got a pair of these, then. And it's actually really sweet to slot a new character/little kid into the linked souls group that we see in Soul Mates.

Quote
She couldn’t leave him there. She just couldn’t.
I like that this line is separated out because of the extra drama it's lent by that, but also because it separates it a little more from her own experience with the soldiers helping her -- because, while she doesn't know it, this is only half the reason she's about to go back for a man during an air raid, lol.

Quote
He opened his mouth as if to say something, but she cut him off before he had the chance.
That's somehow the perfect introduction, her just interrupting and yelling at him, lol. And after he spent all that time worrying about what to say to her! lol

Quote
Except the man seemed to keep pace with her which was not something most people were easily able to do.
Absolutely darling detail to incorporate into an AIR RAID, when we usually think of this scenario in terms of reporting.

Quote
ARP Warden
At this point, I started wondering if the author was British, or just a stunning researcher. Because I know (and know of) published (mostly American) authors who don't bother with even mentioning the tickets for deep-level shelters, let alone adding in ARP wardens anywhere but walking down a street yelling 'lights out!' So. Wow. I'm impressed.

Quote
He was kind and willing to look the other way on certain things such as people smuggling small pets into the shelter.
Ok, well, now I'm in love with Tom. Was he based on someone, in your own life or in history?

Quote
It put her on edge. Did he know her? Was he a part of her life before she’d lost her memory?
Oof, yikes, bad start, Clark. I also kind of love that he's in trouble before he even says ANYTHING! lol

Quote
He’d found her and lost her in the same night.
Aw, poor guy!

Quote
They felt more like a promise – a window into what it might feel like to actually belong somewhere. And he had been searching for that as long as he could remember.
Ugh, that's so Sweet!

Quote
Clark had so many questions for her, but there hadn’t been time.
Great device to use on us, too.

Quote
You’ll want to help. You’ll want to save people. It’s in your nature. But you can’t.
I feel like... nahhhhhh... Clark's not going to do this, lol. But what a great obstacle to put up to really plunge him into despair while he's here! And it's also great because this is historically a problem that Lois Lane can solve.

Quote
He hated that word – casualties. There was nothing casual about war or death.
Love this detail. Excellent.

Quote
He wasn’t sure he would be able to live with himself if he did what Wells was asking. And yet, he wasn’t sure he could live with himself if he left her there either.
And this is how you trap Superman. If more villains understood this kind of mental paradox, he'd have been a goner long ago.

Quote
He couldn’t just do nothing.
YAY!

Quote
It was nearly impossible to avoid, however, and even as he worked to get one person out, another fell victim to the flames or the collapsing structure of the building.
Ugh, that's devastating.

Quote
He’d seen a lot since assuming the identity of Superman, but this was a new form of horror.
whinging

Quote
There were moments he almost doubled over and wept as he came across not just bodies, but sometimes just limbs.
So this whole section is brutal, of course, but it really does a credible job of landing us in a collapsing building during the bombings, detailed and emotional.

Quote
And though the blood would wash off, he knew that in many ways, it was there for good.
That's a brilliant line.

Quote
Lois couldn’t let that happen. He was already so scared and so alone. He needed her.
That's so heart wrenching. Especially coming from a woman whom we assume had Sam and Ellen as parents.

Quote
She allowed her gaze to drift over to the dresser on the other side of the room where a small piece of rock sat atop it – the most unique shade of purple she had ever seen.
Huh.

Quote
Instead, she was allowed emergency residency under the assumption that she had either a partner or family member fighting with the British army – an assumption she hadn’t bothered to correct.
Clever. It's amazing how she retained enuogh of her personality/instincts/training as a reporter to just keep sneaking her way into places.

Quote
Lois often wondered if he woke up every morning expecting to see the faces of the parents he’d lost, sleeping in the bed he once slept in
Ooof, Author.

Quote
Though she’d stumbled into the job at the Daily Mirror, she quickly learned she had a knack for it, not to mention a willingness to go places others wouldn’t.
Wow. Yeah, lucky that she 'stumbled' into it. Why do I have a feeling that she gravitated to it?? I love that Lois always ends up in a similar profession. And I also love that here, the reader has a little more knowledge than Lois about who she is/what she does/what's coming. It makes it more fun, and helps to balance the backdrop of the Blitz.

Quote
“Do you think that man from last night is okay, Lolo?” Jamie asked quietly.
It's sweet that he's still thinking of Clark. It makes it feel like the connection can be between the three of them, and really sets up the family feel.

Quote
“I’m sure he’s fine, little bear,” she told him, hoping the use of the endearment she had for him would put him at ease.
The nickname really got me.

Quote
Built in the art-deco style of the 1920s, it was a large multi-story stone building with lots of geometric detail and large steel-framed windows that flooded the interior of the building with light. It stretched over an entire city block, housing not just the editorial areas, but the printing presses as well.
Is this intentionally set up to remind of us of the Planet??

Quote
Her editor had told the employees on more than one occasion that the Mirror was a daily paper and would come out every day.
This so deeply vibes with the mindset of the time. Nice touch.

Quote
It was necessary to let people think she had a British husband overseas in order to stay in London and it was necessary for people to think that Jamie was her son who had been evacuated and sent home again because he missed her. Lois knew that if the wrong people got wind of the fact that she had found him and taken him in, she could lose him.
So she's under quite a bit of threat here.

Quote
The men she worked with had made no secret about their disdain for a woman reporter – especially one with a child. Though all were expected to “do their part” right now to help the war effort, Lois knew that she was expected to do so somewhere more befitting her sex.
So infuriatingly frustrating and SO perfectly on target for the time period.

Quote
it always simply read ‘by Staff Reporter’.
While this is good for the history books, and a nice workaround to messing up the timeline, I just want to slap her editor.

Quote
Seems the Cafe de Paris was destroyed last night.
whinging

Quote
Lois had already done one story on it, calling it a symbol of defiance and hope. A way for the people of London to say that they would not be terrified into submission.
GOOD! That's right in line with her character. Love this.

Quote
Towards the front of the building she saw the figure of a man.
It's almost as if she were drawn to him, lol

Quote
“It…it’s you,” he said, sounding slightly shocked.
“And you,” Lois replied, feeling oddly out of breath, though she couldn’t explain why.
Yay! And I love where you're taking the soulmate bond vibe here!

Quote
The smoke had cleared, but Clark still had trouble breathing.
Awww, poor guy.

Quote
But the costume wasn’t here, and he was the one who needed saving.
That packs an emotional wallop.
Quote
Clark closed his eyes, trying to imagine they were in a park in Metropolis. He tried to imagine that they were sitting there watching people walk to and fro, going about their daily lives with a coffee in hand as they talked.
This is such an innocent daydream for him, just wishing for the mundanity of the little moments. So in character.

Quote
All he saw were bodies.
And then, yeah, gut punch.

Quote
“You got involved,” Lois said, with no judgement in her voice. The first rule of journalism – keep your distance from the story. Don’t let it get personal. But it was a rule that no good reporter could abide by and they both knew it. “You tried to help. You risked your life.”
“I had to,” he croaked, trying desperately to keep his emotions at bay. “I tried and it wasn’t enough. I…I couldn’t…”
I wonder if she's more or less willing to jump in without checking the water level here? Maybe less willing, since she has to look out for Jamie? but regardless, I love that this puts them on the same level with 'they both knew it.' It makes them both more vulnerable.

Quote
It’s all any of us can do.” A soft breeze wafted through the air blowing gently through Lois’ hair and he felt something inside him stir.
I know you're not literally writing magic, but this feels like a universe-given sign. She literally utters the magic Lois to Superman words and the wind picks up. Sweet and a lot of fun!

Quote
Suddenly he wondered – was he right to try and interfere with that? What if she was happy here? Was he right to try and bring her back because of some misguided notion that they belonged together? He didn’t believe in soul mates, after all.
Oh, MAN, this Clark cannot resist putting things in his own way! This does make it a lot trickier, though.

Quote
“A collaboration between the Mirror and the Planet then?” He said, trying to sound as casual as possible and failing miserably.
rotflol I feel like this is the equivalent of asking Clark if he'd like to meet Santa.

Quote
“That sounds like fun.”
jawdrop

Quote
He would do anything she asked him to.
Oh, no, he doesn't believe in soul mates at aaaaaalllllll... lol

Quote
She didn’t want to have to start all over again.
Great, emotional, heart tugging reasons to not want to trust someone!

Quote
Jamie knew to call her ‘Mama’ in public if he had to, though it hadn’t happened often and she didn’t let many people get close enough to ask too many questions.
Really smart kid. Perfect fit for her.

Quote
Nobody had smiled at her like that in a long time.
Awww. The love in wartime trope is so perfectly ooey gooey.

Quote
Having no memories meant that she had no sense of what she’d lost. She had nothing and nobody to mourn. She might have had friends, family…she might have been married and have children of her own.
"It's the not knowing that kills you." (...or something like that.)

Quote
But he wasn’t in uniform and somehow she knew that he wasn’t a soldier at heart.
That's a fully loaded statement for the reader.

Quote
“You look good,” she said, before she could stop herself. He raised an eyebrow and she felt herself blush. “I mean, you clean up…good.”
Adorable.

Quote
Working with Clark was surprisingly easy. He had a tendency to edit her spelling which she found supremely irritating,
This an adorable detail, too, to carry over to the alt-universe.

Part 2... (I'll post part 2 separately, and I'll plan to finish this story before the GTA deadline).

Okay. I think this is my new favorite Alt-Clark-finds-his-Lois story. I found some quotes I wanted to drool over, but I've lost them... They were great though, so perfect.

Yes, quite,” Mr. Wells said with a small smile. “I apologise for being late, Mr. Kent

A time traveller who isn’t on time!!!

Quote
I’ve taken up too much time with my tardiness as it is. Funny, being late, considering I have a time machine.”

See??

Quote
You must stay out of it, and let these events unfold as they are meant to.”

He’s going to struggle with this.

Quote
Lois woke the next day with Jamie snuggled up against her, clutching her tightly.

I love that she has taken in this child, but I am concerned how that’s going to pan out if they return to her timeline . 👀

Quote
Though she’d stumbled into the job at the Daily Mirror, she quickly learned she had a knack for it, not to mention a willingness to go places others wouldn’t.

I love that she is still a reporter

Quote
“Lane and Kent,” she said with a grin. “It has a nice ring, don’t you think?”

😍

Quote
There are things I’ve never told anyone. Things I…I want to trust you. That’s a big deal for me. I need you to know that.”

A very big deal seeing as they have just met.
And they both have secrets!

Quote
Something had gone wrong with the time machine causing an electrical disturbance that the local radar had mistaken for an attack.

I probably shouldn't find this (slightly) amusing.

Quote
Even if I did tell her who I am, I don’t think I could convince her to leave him here.”

Yeah, she is not leaving that child, unless it’s with his parents.

Quote
Will you…will you fly with me?”
Nice.

Quote
After all, an unidentified object spotted in the sky could very well trigger another air-raid.”
Yeah, don't want any more false alarms.

Quote
“Don’t be sad, Mr. Kent,” Jamie said, looking at Lois with a trusting smile. “Whatever it is, Lolo will sort it. She always does.”
🥹
I mean, is taking one little boy to the future really going to break the fabric of reality? I say risk it. 🙃

Quote
Jamie Evans did as well. Tonight, as a matter of fact. In an air raid.”

Wha….??

Quote
They climbed in and Clark sat there, dazed, holding Jamie and Lois in his arms as the controls on the machine whirred to life, taking them away to safety.
Far out, this whole scene was so tense and emotional.

Quote
Always,” he promised her. “Let’s go to work.”

Ahhh, this was so good. I could just read more in this universe. I love alt-Clark and always love stories where he finds "his" Lois. I loved the relationship between Lois and Jaimie and I really felt like I was in that world. So glad Lois was able to take the boy with them.

Not sure who to pick as the author! The obvious is
Ksarasara.
Could also be
Lovetvfan
or another option I am toying with is
JellyS2.
I don't think I have read any of their work before, but during my (light) stalking of the boards I've found they have written at least one epic long fic (which looks amazing by the way, and now on my tbr list).

I like that Lois, Clark, and Jamie could become a family . The part where Wells told Clark not to save people made me feel angry and sorry for Clark. The part where Jamie called Lois a liar was devastating .

MADE IT! Okay, now I have to start guessing... Oy. My first thought when I saw the length was either Sara or Sara. Then, while reading, I remembered that JadedEvie does long angst very well too. For some reason, though, I kept thinking of BlindPassenger throughout this one; I know BP doesn't care for the soulmates as a concept, so AltClark's constant railing against the idea makes me thing BP was either the author or the prompter. Plus, there were a couple of typos that could be blamed on speech-to-text picking a wrong but similar-sounding word. So...BP, is this you?

This was just...sooo good! Probably one of the best Alt-Clark/Lois-fics I've ever read! Its also such a fresh take on the whatever-happened-to-AltLois trope, I don't think I've seen something like that before. I can only imagine the amount of research that was necessary to depict all the historical details and such. I also like how they do not initially fall for each other (well, at least Lois doesn't) and there's a bit of ajourney there. Love the addition of Jamie. Poor kid, imagine falling aslep in the middle of a bombing and then wake up 55 years in the future, kabbom! Thats quite something to process there. Wells is also very in character, well-meaning but also somewhat overbearing/fixed on his own ideas of how things should be. But glad he came through in the end.
This fic had me hooked from start to finish and I couldn't stop reading it.

Guesses:
Hmm, I know, its the obvious answer and thus, maybe wrong, but eh. It just...fits well. I'll go with

Part 2

Quote
She’d been very careful about the questions she’d answered – in fact, in many ways, she had been just as evasive as he had been.
She'd assessed him very similarly in the last section, and it's nice to see them placed on more even ground like this.

Quote
“Sounds like your editor is an idiot,” Clark said. Lois laughed, appearing surprised at his bluntness.
Yes. Misogyny is idiotic. Love that he made her laugh with this!

Quote
For the millionth time, he brushed away the thought that the other Clark would have handled this better.
I think the imposter syndrome is a particularly nice device here because you've paired it so effectively with this character's choice not to believe in soul mates. It compounds his internal obstacles in a really great stacked way. If he did go for the soul mate thing, it would give him some relief from this, to believe that he's the only one that can save his Lois. This is really effective here, really builds tension.

Quote
The other Clark was a hero, but he felt like just a guy who put on tights sometimes in an attempt to help make things better.
You do a great job of making even the strongest man on earth feel vulnerable.

Quote
He smiled apologetically, registering in surprise that she’d called him by his name.
Love that he clocked her breaking one of their tacit rules.

Quote
He wished he could tell her that at the Daily Planet she had been highly respected by everyone she knew, but he knew it wasn’t the time.
This is a really effective mental box you've trapped him in.

Quote
He wasn’t used to anyone considering his feelings when it came to what he went through. To the rest of the world, he was invulnerable in almost every way.
Sweet that even with no idea who she is, she sees him. I feel like the show misses this point (in service to the love 'triangle'), and you're capturing it here.

Quote
He longed to pick up the phone and call someone, but even if he were in his own time, there was nobody for him to call. His pain had always been his own.
Oooof. I did forget the isolation aspect for alt-Clark. You're really building him a detailed psychology!

Quote
Clark couldn’t help but admire the will to continue to try after being attacked over and over again.
Nice metaphor for Clark himself here.

Quote
He’d convinced himself that she was the answer to his loneliness, and was now realising how deeply unfair that was to both of them.
What a sincerely advanced mentality for this character. People is rl don't have this kind of insight about themselves.

Quote
It was dangerous for him to want.
But he did. He couldn’t help it.
So sad. I know I'm fairly analytic, but really, this whole section hits you in the chest.

Quote
It was the store owner who swept the debris away from his front door and opened like clockwork every morning, even if the rest of the shops around him were on fire.
Great detail and so personal and evocative.

Quote
It was even more terrifying to know that out there somewhere was a nameless, faceless enemy who knew her, even if she didn’t know them.
Ooof, yikes. That's paralyzing.

Quote
She had a feeling that he was the type of person who took it upon himself to save the world.
I love the dramatic irony here, and love how it's used to sweetly.

Quote
“Says who?” She demanded, feeling inexplicably angry at these people, whoever they were, for making him feel as if he wasn’t good enough.
Love this take.

Quote
“You have to get to the shelter!” he was saying to her – she had never heard anyone sound so scared.
Ugh, amongst all the Clark-torture about not being able to save people, I didn't put together how completely gut-wrenching it has to be for him every time one fo the sirens goes off because she's not safe and he's can't protect her with his powers.

Quote
“I need you to stay calm,” Clark was telling her – his voice gentle but firm. It reassured her in a way nothing else could have. She wasn’t alone.
That moment killed me.

Quote
If she didn’t know any better, she would swear he was trying to see right through it.
Sort of a shame she does know better, lol.

Quote
Clark seemed to snap back to attention.
lol

Quote
Lois was surprised by how comfortable Jamie was talking to him. He was usually quite shy with most people.
The Superman + kids phenomenon.

Quote
Something in his reaction told her this meant something to him, though she had no idea why.
On the second read, it really hit that as an orphan, he might have wished someone that had cared like Lois would have taken him in at 10. He got lucky that it happened once, with the Kents, but in this context, it's crushing that it didn't happen again.

Quote
Wells looked slightly surprised. Clark grimaced.
Ugh, in the overall of the story, it feels like Wells is judging him. Poor Clark.

Quote
“I can’t just let people die,” Clark argued, his face hot with both shame and indignance.
Tbh... Is Wells crazy, dropping Superman into the middle of a war? What did he THINK was going to happen here?

Quote
"I just thought that after all I put you through with the other Lois and Mr. Kent that –”
“I needed this,” Clark said, his voice hoarse.
Wow, yikes. That sort of play only works if it turns out -- and if the players don't know.

Quote
“Well of course not,” Wells retorted incredulously. “Did you honestly think that just because she’s your soul mate that it would be that easy?”
“I…” Clark’s mouth opened and closed for a moment in surprise at Wells’ words. He had thought it was supposed to be easy.
They really only gave Clark like half the playbook here. No wonder he's just spiraling. (Not criticizing the plot - that's great. But omg, Wells.)

Quote
"Upon further analysis, I discovered it would make a suitable alternative fuel source for the time travel machine,” Wells admitted.
COOL!

Quote
The coldness seemed to spread over her, numbing her. Had she gotten him all wrong? Who was he?
I winced at this.

Quote
His eyes widened when she pulled it out and the look he gave her almost tore her in two.
It's totally crushing that he's afraid of people being afraid of him for his powers, and now the person that matters most is terrified of him for something else entirely. It's really not fair.

Quote
She was afraid because he was a man. She was afraid because he had unintentionally physically intimidated her and because he had been in her apartment late at night.
This feels very, well, I was going to say 'topical' but I don't want to give the context that this feels like it has a shelf life. It feels immediate. And timeless, too. Which is sad and defeating and tragic and true.

Quote
“What is this? A threat? A reminder that you can get to me – to Jamie anytime you want?”
“No, I —” oh, God, he had never thought she’d see it like that.
Such a great use of intent vs impact here.

Quote
“I thought I could,” she said sadly, finally looking him in the eye. He immediately wished she hadn’t. He felt something inside him break a little.
whinging

Quote
Lois wondered if part of the reason she was so resistant to believing Clark’s story was that she found it almost impossible to believe there was a future for any of them. Was there any sort of world in which the Germans didn’t win?
This reeeeealllly taps into the time period. Great job welding this to Lois' present.

Quote
“You’re right, that’s a lie,” he said heavily. “But if I told you the truth you would only think me even more insane.”
I have to appreciate this.

Quote
“More insane than telling me that I’m really from the future and I was thrown back in time by a magic rock? More insane than that?”
To her surprise, Clark chuckled.
“Yeah, more insane than that, believe it or not,” was all he said.
This is actually a delightful little bit of brevity here.

Quote
“She’s not a cook, she’s my housekeeper,” he admitted. “Technically tea is not one of her duties but she does it so well and I’m not in the best of health.”
Gotta love that he REQUESTS this and doesn't demand it. Seems like he respects his servant - just nice to see here.

Quote
She’d barely noticed the cup of tea being placed in front of her, or the fact that HG Wells had made himself scarce.
LOL. Wells just bounces - that's great!

Quote
Either way, the only thing he ever said was: It’s because of me. It’s because of me.
Oh nooooooo..... Kids take on so much.

Quote
“For what it’s worth, I know what it’s like to have to hide parts of yourself in order to be accepted. It’s hard and exhausting and it breaks you down a little bit every single day.”
That's deeply articulate.

Quote
She wanted to love him.
whinging

Quote
“Yes,” he told her. He stood up and held out his hand to her. “Will you…will you fly with me?”
GREAT section ending!

I'll respond to pt 3 soon - hoping to make it before the GTA ends!

Part 3

Quote
It felt like a gift – a kind of acceptance he’d never received from anyone.
Really nice juxtaposing her with other characters from the show here -- Lana in particular comes to mind.

Quote
He realised that even the other Lois had never truly accepted him for who he was. The moment she’d arrived in his dimension, she had made it her mission to mold him into the man she’d loved in her own.
Yay!! What a nuanced revelation!

Quote
He realised that even the other Lois had never truly accepted him for who he was. The moment she’d arrived in his dimension, she had made it her mission to mold him into the man she’d loved in her own.
There's the rub.

Quote
Her body pressed against his and he had to close his eyes for a second to keep from being overwhelmed by it. Her hair smelled faintly of rain and fresh air. When he opened his eyes, she looked up at him, her own dark eyes wide with nerves and a kind of anticipatory thrill that seemed to run between them like an electric current.
Yeah, the intimacy of this whole section is just overwhelmingly lovely. love

Quote
Knowing who to trust had to have been a minefield.
That's a universal truth! Love the way you've framed this.

Quote
He wasn’t the hero the other Lois had tried to create. He didn’t know where that line was between man and myth. And he would eventually have to break her heart.
This is really like a one, two punch.

Quote
But up here, there was just the sky.
This is so simply phrased, but somehow still so evocative.

Quote
The silence between them was profound, broken only by the slight movements she made in an effort to be closer, the whisper of the wind against their skin and the rhythm of her heartbeat as it seemed to beat in sync with his.
This is so poetic.

Quote
All I know is that when Wells told me he’d found you, I knew I needed to be the one to bring you home.
This is really sweet.

Quote
and damn the timeline
What a hero. It's just so dramatic, I love it.

Quote
She had promised to take Jamie to St. James’ park and had invited Clark to come.
This is such a delightfully sweet vignette in the first place. But I love the structure of it in the midst of the war, interrupting the main dramatic drive of the story with the little oasis of relief.

Quote
“He seems sad…like he’s lookin’ for somethin’,” Jamie told her.
Well that's unbelievably heartbreaking.

Quote
It had barely left his arms since the false alarm.
Poor kid. Nice touch.

Quote
The ornamental lake that used to be there was gone – drained and replaced with temporary government buildings.
I didn't know that they'd done this. It had to look so weird.

Quote
She wondered if the world had somehow recovered from the devastation that this war had brought and resolved to ask Clark about it later.
This is another bit that feels somehow topical or timely (and hits harder because of it) - I wish we had a time-traveling-Clark that could answer this for us now.

Quote
How strange it was not to know if she’d ever been in love.
Not sure if it's sadder than she doesn't know or sadder that she hasn't - either way, this is so sad.

Quote
a football, though where he’d found one was anybody’s guess.
...Not in the country?

Quote
Jamie had been right – they were similar. There was a kinship there that seemed almost instinctual. She might even envy it if it wasn’t so obvious that both Clark and Jamie seemed so happy together.
This whole thing is just beyond darling.

Quote
“He deserves to know what happened.”
It's nice to see him advocating for Jamie this way.

Quote
“He asked you not to interfere as well, didn’t he?” Lois asked him, her voice barely above a whisper.
That's awfully clever. And definitely a Lois Lane leap in logic.

Quote
“Look, I can fly!”
OMG, speaking of clever. Absolutely wrenching, too.

Quote
You’re just a man. That has to be enough.”
“But I’m not,” Clark said softly, sadly. “I’m different. I have these abilities to help people. I thought it would be simple, but I don’t know how to live with these choices.
Great juxtaposition in this section of her being SO sure and him feeling so uncertain. It really feels like you can see the balance here of what makes them necessary together. She's somehow his foil.

Quote
He glanced over to see Jamie was watching them carefully.
Kids are so smart. Fascinated to know what he's piecing together here.

Quote
But he still couldn’t shake the feeling that he was Superman in name only – that he was wearing someone else’s borrowed clothes and that eventually he was going to make a mistake so monumental everyone would know he was a fraud.
It was just SO clever to give him imposter syndrome. Like, the evidence is all there for us already (in the series), so it makes this very compelling. But it's not spelled out there - and yet it feels like such an easy, simple leap that it looks obvious the way you've painted it in this story, and at the same time, I feel like I haven't really seen this explored before. Just such an intuitive and dynamic way to deepen this character who is not-quite-Clark, but has been uniquely influenced by him.

Quote
“Then I won’t,” he promised, pulling her close once more for a quick, fierce kiss. “But I do.”
This is so incredibly in character, lol. And also, awwwwwww!

Quote
She sat up, moving into his lap in between desperate kisses. She needed this. She needed him. She felt like she could do anything when he touched her.
It's really nice the way you marry physical touch to psychological shifts.

Quote
“It could,” Wells admitted. “But I can’t help but think that if that young lad was meant to die tonight, how much harm can it be to take him to Metropolis? Maybe he’s just listed as dead because his body is never found. Maybe this was what was intended all along.”
WOW, YAY for Wells! I've really been up and down about this character's competency, but THIS is all-star character behavior. And I like that it just might also be growth to be less obsessed about what Must Be and instead just choosing to Do the Right Thing. Very Superman-coded of him, come to think of it.

Quote
Clark, we need to find him before –”
It was too late. As if summoned, the wail of the air raid siren began to sound and she shook with fear.
You really found the way to do this with maximum efficacy.

Quote
“Not helping, Wells,” Clark snapped.
Bahahahaaaaaa...

Quote
It felt like everything was ending.
This is such a tidy descriptor to put exactly here, since it echos their emotional state, the story itself, their time in the past, living through the war, etc.

Quote
He would grieve and mourn later, but he knew he would never question this choice.
Love that this ultimately has stemmed from Lois/his love for her, her love for Jamie. But it's really nice character growth. And of course, it would be a child that would effect Clark enough to put Superman on the right path.

Quote
A single paw from Jamie’s stuffed bear Snowy could be seen crushed under the rocks.
That is brutal.

Quote
Metropolis - March 20th, 1997
Yayyyyyy!!!

Quote
She could only imagine how lonely he must have been.
It was only now she realized how lonely she had also been.
Lovely use of the parallel sentence structure here.

Quote
“You gave me the courage to be the person everyone else thinks I am,” he told her simply. “Everyone here calls me Superman, but you taught me how to be him.”
love

Quote
“Lex Luthor,” he told them.
jawdrop

Quote
“Always,” he promised her. “Let’s go to work.”
OMG, SUCH a CUTE ending.

Loved this. I do want a sequel where they take down purple-kyptonite-wielding-Lex (and omg, scenes with Grandpa Perry and Jamie), but this story does feel complete, too. What a fantastic journey, with such artistic and well-researched details!

I am pretty happy with being compared to those two authors! Thanks for the comment! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I'm kind of hoping for a sequel to check in and see how he's adapting to living in the future.
As for the author... it reminded me some of BlueOwl but there were of few things that made me think maybe not. I'm leaning more toward the popular guess of KSarasara.

I was REALLY worried about doing an Alt-Universe story for your prompts because they didn't specifically say NOT to, but it was defnitely implied that you wanted regular universe. I just couldn't think of any other way of doing it thought LOL. I am glad you were able to enjoy the story anyway. I hadn't really planned on a sequel, but if an idea strikes me I might write one. Thank you SO much for your comment. I definitely don't mind being compared to KSarasara smile

Even looking back it seems so unlikely.

A lot of little hints have me believe this was written by someone who grew up in Britain. I think this is the work of
lovetvfan

I didn't grow up there, but I did live there for a while. I am REALLY glad you liked it. I worried after I wrote it how the FoLCs in Germany might feel. I am sure it's a difficult part of history. But your country DID move past it which is amazing. I am grateful you read and enjoyed this. Thank you!

YAY I'm glad there are other people out there who love wartime stories set during the Blitz! And thank you ahead of time for your detailed and WONDERFUL comments! You really made me see things in a new light. I am going to reply to all three comments because you took so much time I feel it's only fair.

PART 1

Quote
her feet sinking into deep green wetness as she scrambled to escape.
Love the word choice for verbs in this section but the ambiguity of the 'deep green wetness' somehow makes this WORSE; really evocative.

Thank you!

Quote

To a point, yes.

Quote
He’d learned to compartmentalise his loneliness; to push it deep down until it became a low level ache inside – painful, but bearable.
...perfectly healthy.

Ha ha! No kidding, right?

Quote
Wells stood there, fist raised looking slightly flustered.
“Sorry,” Clark said somewhat sheepishly, standing back to let the small man enter.
Great interaction here, lol. I always love a flustered Wells.

I had a bit of fun with Wells. I've never really written him much before.

Quote
Funny, being late, considering I have a time machine.” He chuckled.
THANK YOU! And yes, this is funny.

I got a kick out of the irony lol

Yeah I always liked his character. I didn't always care for the idea that they create a Utopian society especially since telling them (and us) that it all works out takes some of the tension out but his character is always a hoot.

Oh man I totally would have written that chapter if I'd had more time!

Quote
March 8th 1941
I re-read this date like 3 times because I was so surprised that you were going here. Great event to isolate.

I did SO much research for this lol. I eventually settled on this one because of how devastating it was and how close it was to the REALLY destructive campaign on the 18th/19th.

Quote
council flat
This is when I started to think it was a British writer.

Heh. No, but I did live in Scotland for a year so I picked up a LOT.

Quote
Was that what happened to his parents? Lois still didn’t know and he refused to talk about it.
Oh, nooooo.... I was wondering if this was why he was still in London all the way into 1941.

Yeah frown

I didn't even think of the bear in GGOH! After reading these comments I realized I never really said what happened to the bear so when I put the story on A03, I made a few changes including Clark repairing Snowy and Jamie sleeping with him in his arms in the hospital. I just couldn't leave him like that lol

Quote
It had been six months since the air raids had begun, but they hadn’t gotten any less terrifying.
Yeah... he really needs to get her out of there. It's March, so this gets worse before it gets better.

It really does.

Quote
It was as if a part of her was afraid that if she let go of him for even a second, she would lose him.
This is the most 'mom' sentence ever written.

Ha ha! I am going to take that as a HUGE compliment cause...yeah.

Quote
He wasn’t hers, and yet he was.
She's got a pair of these, then. And it's actually really sweet to slot a new character/little kid into the linked souls group that we see in Soul Mates.

It was weird, when I pictured the story, Lois had a kid. I didn't even know why, but I just knew he had to be there.

And after he spent all that time worrying about what to say to her! lol

Ha ha! That's just SO Lois Lane, though, right?

Quote
Except the man seemed to keep pace with her which was not something most people were easily able to do.
Absolutely darling detail to incorporate into an AIR RAID, when we usually think of this scenario in terms of reporting.

Ha ha! Thank you!

Quote

Oh wow that's an incredible compliment considering how far down the rabbit hole I went lol. A lot of this I knew, and a lot I did have to research, but I also have a degree in history and a good chunk of my degree was spent on British and early Canadian history so I already had a foot in the door so to speak.

Quote
He was kind and willing to look the other way on certain things such as people smuggling small pets into the shelter.
Ok, well, now I'm in love with Tom. Was he based on someone, in your own life or in history?

Ha ha! No, not at all. I just wondered what people did with their pets during air raids and in my research found that some ARP Wardens allowed small animals to be smuggled in and I couldn't imagine leaving my cat behind lol.

Ha ha! Yeah Wells is an idiot to drop him into a war and say "don't save anyone".

Quote
He hated that word – casualties. There was nothing casual about war or death.
Love this detail. Excellent.

It's a personal pet peeve of mine -- that word.

Quote
He wasn’t sure he would be able to live with himself if he did what Wells was asking. And yet, he wasn’t sure he could live with himself if he left her there either.
And this is how you trap Superman. If more villains understood this kind of mental paradox, he'd have been a goner long ago.

VERY true.

Thank you!

I wish I'd had more time to explore Jamie's experience.

I'm glad! I call my daughter a similar nickname smile

Ha ha! No, not at all. I researched what the building looked like back then and did my best to describe it.

Her editor had told the employees on more than one occasion that the Mirror was a daily paper and would come out every day.
This so deeply vibes with the mindset of the time. Nice touch.

Yeah that was also a product of research -- finding out what would still be working and functional the day after.

Yeah there were VERY few war time reporters that were women.

Quote
it always simply read ‘by Staff Reporter’.
While this is good for the history books, and a nice workaround to messing up the timeline, I just want to slap her editor.

It's actually something that happened as well. I read about a few women who reported on the war and initally didn't get the byline.

Seems the Cafe de Paris was destroyed last night.
whinging

Yeah I definitely made her a little more tentative here. She's a bit less likely to call out the sexism of the day because she needs the job and less likely to make waves because she's trying to stay under the radar.

HA HA HA HA!

I had a HELL of a time thinking of a name for him to call her that sounded affectionate, but not directly maternal.

EXACTLY

THANK YOU for taking the time!

Oh wow, THANK YOU so much! I'm really glad you liked it. I have never written Alt-Clark story so I was a bit nervous that it would work.
