The story format is a nod to an early legend in the fandom, but yeah.

That's why I put a warning in it.

(hugs)

I'm just going to pretend option A doesn't exist. Tank ending. pffft! Their families dying too just made it too much.

Anyway, ignoring that bucket of angst. The beginning was so sweet. The middle was tense. And the real ending was touching. She pulled him through. Great story.

It's not my favorite kind of story either. It took me about 4 years to get the emotional courage to read any of Tanks work, and I still don't prefer it.

That said, I do think that the beginning of the story is lovely! The scene in the townhouse is so warm and cozy. I love the phrase about a hug in a bowl, haha. That's *real* comfort food!

This started off very sweet and fluffy and quickly took a turn then an even bigger turn with the Tank ending!

I think this has to be written by someone who has been in the fandom for a long time... I think the obvious choice would be
Queenofthecapes
because of the CYOA aspect but I'm not sure, something is throwing me off, so my other option is
Darth Michael

Anyway, I did really like this but that TANK ending OMG
I mean it's one thing to kill off L&C but then to also kill of their parents! LOL

I'm gonna pretend that TANK ending was Clark hallucinating and Option B was the real ending. laugh

Wow, this was intense. With the Tank Ending I'm leaning towards a writer who has been around for a long time, since I'm not sure Tank and Wendy were still active when I joined the boards. Which also was a long time ago. I think this might have been written by a fellow German speaker.

At first I was considering
DarthMicheal
. But now I think this might have been
blg1987

Tank's writing was in a word... intense and so was this story.

I can't even begin to imagine who wrote this angst fest, but it really had my attention. Now, my question or rather request: SEQUEL! Who is the one behind the gunman? Honestly, with such a fabulous start you gotta take the next steps. grovel

A writer's job is to think of new plots and create characters who stay with you long after the final page has been read. If that mission is accomplished than we have done what we set out to do, which is to entertain and hopefully educate.

Oh wow, this was intense! And a Tank ending to boot! It was REALLY well written and had me hooked the entire time. The angst was excellent -- not over the top and had me on the edge of my seat. It started off so WAFFY and got WHAM-y really quick but it was done so very well!

The Tank ending has me leaning towards Darth Michael here....

I LOVED the inventiveness of the multiple endings. And I really got a kick out of the blame on the reader in "Congratulations - you’ve chosen the Tank Ending, everyone is dead, you really shouldn’t have burned a piece of Clark’s childhood." This really did feel like a Tank ending.

Quote
The smell of curry drifted through the brownstone - spiced, savory and warm, like a hug in a bowl. Snow fell steadily outside, the world muted by a thickening blanket of white.
Compliments on lulling us into a false sense of security here. This language is SO cozy. Disarming as heck!

Quote
that comfort sometimes came in ladlefuls.
Love this phrasing and lesson!

Quote
She paused, then added with a wry smile, “Though, dealing with Intergang might be less dangerous than keeping my family in close quarters.”
lol

Quote
Lois shook her head. “Must be a family trait, right? Before I fell in love with you I had the same problem.”
It is kind of wild that these two dated Lex Luthor and Metallo.

Quote
He turned back with a grin. “Maybe we get snowed in?”
She sighed. “I’ve married my personal snow plow, I don’t think we’ll ever get snowed in.”
Their dialogue though this whole section (and above) is so charming and sweet.

Quote
"No one called for help?” she asked.
He shook his head. “They did. But the shot was fatal. Instant. There was nothing for Superman to do.
I love that she asks for and receives more information. It totally makes sense that he would just have this, and let her focus on the other investigation.

Quote
She squeezed his hand. “He planned it that way. You save who can be saved. This…” she gestured toward the screen, “…isn’t about you failing.”
Awww.

Quote
The wind brushed against the windows like a whispered lullaby.
Love this phrasing. ...even if it is wholly duplicitous, knowing what's coming. lol

Quote
“Well, nothing short of the apocalypse is getting in the way of this weekend.”
Lois tilted her head. “You’re tempting fate, you know.”
“Eh,” he shrugged, “fate’s had its shot.”
“I guess you’re right…” Lois straightened up.
This is just so evil. I read the whole thing before I started the FDK, and I had NO idea this was a Tank style fic. I was a little bit curious about why they were bouncing around to these particular topics while I read part 1, but I just didn't see this coming at all. On the re-read it's all RIGHT THERE. Really well done.

Quote
Clark chuckled, pulling her even closer. “I like watching you - I don’t need a reason.”
Aww.

Quote
He kissed her forehead. “Smart woman.”
“Don’t forget it.”
Cute!

Quote
Clark gave a faint nod, but his eyes didn’t leave the street. His head tilted slightly.
This is where I got worried.

Quote
“Probably just my imagination.”
This is where I panicked.

Quote
Behind her, Clark moved–
And then–
Crack.
This whole sequence below is great, but the way this starts feels particularly well timed.

Quote
He was heavy. Too heavy.
Nicely done.

Quote
She crossed the room quickly, keeping low and out of sight as she yanked the curtains shut.
Clever. I love that she's competent here, that she's good in an emergency. I feel like that's a very classic Lois.

Quote
She’d done it before.
Only back then, she hadn’t known the man in the suit was Clark. He hadn't been her husband then.
And somehow, that made this so much harder.
Ugh, this is so real.

Quote
She gasped when she saw the bruising beneath the skin: not just around the entry point, but fanned out in a grim constellation across his side, a slight greenish hue mixed in with his bruises.
The bullet hadn’t gone through - it had shattered.
Ohhh my god this is so smart and so horrible. (Horrible here is meant as a compliment.)

Quote
The sniper!
It's so awful that two people lost their lives because they were practice shots. ...unless Intergang is just cleaning house, but this headcanon is worse to me, so that's how I'm interpreting it.

Quote
"That’s it," she whispered. "You’re okay. I’ve got you." The bullet was out. He was alive.
But as she lifted the gauze the wounds hadn’t closed up. He wasn't healing. Instead, it had begun to bleed more, a dark, steady ooze that defied everything she knew about him.
The turnaround on these two sentences is gripping.

Quote
His skin felt too cold under her hand.
Too human.
Crushing use of the 'human' description. Ooof. It's all he every wanted and how it's killing him.

Quote
She didn’t talk. Couldn’t. Not yet. Her focus narrowed to this one task: get them out. All of them. Before it was too late.
Really savvy writing for suspense.

Quote
A faint sound escaped his lips - might’ve been her name. Might’ve just been breath.
This killed me.

Quote
Clark was vulnerable now, the last thing they needed now would be another injury.
Also so smart.

Quote
"Shut up and breathe." Her voice broke slightly. "I’m almost done."
A flicker of a smile ghosted across his lips.
Awww. I think that you've captured one of their most likeable features here, which is that they're still them, even in these kinds of tense, life-altering, larger than life situations.

Quote
Her voice cracked, but she kept talking. If words could anchor him, she’d never stop.
whinging

ENDING A

Quote
macabre shadows across the room. For a few precious moments,
Danger, Will Robinson.

Quote
A weak, almost imperceptible smile touched his lips as he looked at her. "Lois..." he whispered, his voice barely a breath. "You... you always knew how to... keep me warm."
Devastating.

Quote
His eyes, fixed on hers, slowly lost their light, their focus blurring into a distant, empty gaze.
Watching this happen has to be beyond torture for her. Not just that her husband is gone, but literally the savior of the entire world. The whole universe shifts for the worse now.

Quote
She didn’t feel the heat. Only the silence.
Oof. Love this language here.

Quote
Lois sank to the floor beside him, arms wrapped around what she couldn’t save, as the fire closed in.
Brutal.

Their cars, lost in a white-out on an unseen patch of black ice, slid off the treacherous mountain road, plunging silently into the ravine below. No one would find them, no one would ever know.
I think I must have just cracked at the ending because I thought this was tragic and also really hilarious. It was really a relief to read the A/N blaming the audience after this because it felt like such a natural progression.

Only the blizzard remained, a silent witness to the end.
Great bit of drama here. It really aligns with the old choose your own adventure stories. Which, by the way, slightly OT, but David Corenswet's (new Supes from the 2025 movie) grandfather wrote those choose your own adventure books. Wild, right?

ENDING B
I picked this ending first, and was sure I killed him, lol. Yaaaay for misdirection!

Quote
She couldn’t. Not this. Not when everything in her had been fighting to keep him from breaking completely.
Great emotional logic.

Quote
Each inhale felt like a gamble.
Love this language! Painful and keeping us on the edge of our seats.

Quote
Then - a twitch.
She almost didn’t notice it. The faintest movement beneath her hand. But then another.
Clark shifted - just slightly - but enough that she felt it.
A change.
The returning weight of presence behind the stillness.
This whole section is great - the structure, the word choice, the economy, the progression. I also really feel like I should be able to guess the author from this style here.

Quote
She laughed - tired and shaky, almost a sob.
Such a perfect, layered description.

"I don’t think I’m coherent enough to handle Lois Lane in full babble mode.”
lol Nice to bring this staple/Lois trope in here, and in this way.

Quote
But the color was returning and with it, so was hope.
Another great phrase, elevating the tangible with the intangible.

Quote
She reached for the blankets next and tucked them around him with the same reverence she might give to something sacred. Because he was. To her.
This is impenetrably sweet.

Quote
“You kept me here,” he whispered, voice rough but steady. “You didn’t let me go.”
OMG, you let Clark live, but you're just killing us! whinging

Quote
“Prescribed by the world’s leading expert in Lois Lane recovery,” he murmured, nestling against her shoulder, his voice going drowsy.
I do prefer the cute ending, even if I feel like the blizzard is somehow disappointed by this turn of events.

Thank you for the trauma! rotflol

I like that There was an option for a happier ending . The part where Everyone died made me feel very sad . The part where Lois realized the bullet had shattered was intense .

Well ouch. That was a rough one. MAde th emistake to read this while laying half-sick on the couch. Not my best idea.
Also, the change from the very fluffy start looking forward to some fun family shennanigans to...the whammy stuff...was quite something. Did not expect that (despite the wanring, lol)
Lois really coming through for CLakr in this emergency situaiton was definitely good, too. She's just a badass and it shows here.
OF course, the Tank ending doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Its so absurd, that all of this is supposedly caused by the woden horse getting burned, that its kinda funny in the end. But thats the whole point of Tank endings I guess, they are not supposed to make a lot of sense.
Guesses:
So, we have a Tank ending (a tradition that hasn't really been used for a long while on this boards) and we also have the *emphasis* thing, which is something a lot of FOLC have used back in the day, but not too many do nowdays (guess there are alternate ways to do that). For this reasons, I assume it must be an old FOLC, and probably one who hasn't written LC fic for a while, too. And this leads me to highly suspect
Kaylle
Prompt giver Hmm, not sure, honestly. Nothing too specific.

Up, up and away - to the next fanfic.

Hi Author!
Quote
This story is what is known in this fandom as a Tank story. I don’t want to say more here that could spoil the story except: read at your own risk.
I wonder if PuffyTiger added this on her own or was prompted by the author. And if the author knows what they did when they started this…

Quote
The smell of curry drifted through the brownstone - spiced, savory and warm, like a hug in a bowl. Snow fell steadily outside, the world muted by a thickening blanket of white.
Lot’s of sensory input. And a single hyphen as an m-dash. This could indicate that I have to revise my guess for Kathryn84 on The Secrets of Dating…

Quote
“…snowfall expected to reach six to eight inches in some areas by tomorrow evening.
And Kathryn might still be locked in her Advent Calendar mood. She’s also a long enough member of the fandom to have appreciated Mary’s recent Build-your-own-adventure, as well as the hay-days of Wendy and Tank fic…

Quote
“But I didn’t know *you* were that eager to spend time with your family?”
Oh, look, ye olden times asterisk! That’s not a hallmark of Kathryn’s. Hmm…

Quote
“And I still can’t believe we agreed to spend a whole weekend in one cabin with both sets of parents, my sister and her newest crush.”
Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Quote
She blew on it gently, then tasted. “Mmm. Okay, I need to confess. This is the real reason I married you.”
laugh

Quote
Outside, the wind nudged at the windows now and then, rattling them just enough to be noticed.

By the time they were clearing the table, the steady hum of the storm had grown louder.

Lois glanced over her shoulder as she loaded a plate into the dishwasher. “I’m telling you, that’s more than light flurries.”
This whole at-home scene does invoke Kathryn’s style with the Advent Calendar.

Quote
She gave him a look and shrugged. “But your parents will be there too, so it’ll balance out. And if tensions rise, we can always fake an emergency and fly off somewhere.”
Lois is being very pragmatic here. Do the in-laws know?

Quote
“And I packed an emergency chocolate stash, just in case.”
[Linked Image]

Quote
From the living room, the news anchor’s voice floated in: “…and authorities are continuing to investigate what appears to be another sniper attack near the Central Business District.
Oh dear. And this is why we had to option of posting the Tank warning in it’s dedicated thread (https://www.lcficmbs.com/ubb/ubbthreads.php/topics/1736/tank-ending-warnings#Post1736). Although, from the unpinned nature of it, it never took hold. Or the Tank Endings died out. Also, no one today would notice and check. huh Aaaanyway, with the warning and Chekov’s Gun, I’m just a bit worried about Lois’s health down the road…

Quote
He shook his head. “They did. But the shot was fatal. Instant. There was nothing for Superman to do. I didn't even see the victim.
The discussion on Discord is correct, this is dark. Would Kathryn do dark? Would Mary?

Quote
One little boy called it, quote, ‘like Santa, but with muscles and a cape.’”
laugh

Quote
“Speaking of emergency supplies, are you done packing ours?” Lois asked.
The chocolate stash?

Quote
“Eh,” he shrugged, “fate’s had its shot.”
Okay, Kathryn uses very recognizable speech tags peep /rushes off to update author assignments.

Quote
Clark smiled. “And pretending we know how to play Scrabble without cheating.”
rotflol

Quote
“Speak for yourself. I am a paragon of virtue and vocabulary.”
/eyes the ‘virtue’ part suspiciously/

Quote
Clark looked at her with a mock stern expression. “You mean you’re going to invent words in scrabble until everyone else gives up.”

She grinned. “It’s called creativity. And confidence.”
clap You win at Scrabble by playing the players, not the letters.

Quote
Clark chuckled, pulling her even closer. “I like watching you - I don’t need a reason.”

Lois leaned in, eyes dancing. “I noticed - that time we played strip poker.”
shock

Quote
She smirked. “And what did I tell you?”

He kissed her cheek. “That next time I should give you advance notice so you could wear the good lingerie.”
[Linked Image]

Quote
She smiled faintly. “It’s been a week since we had dinner together without a pager or a phone call and Ralph’s going to start spreading rumors if we keep arriving separately.”
Oh this is cute! They could disappear into the storage closet?

Quote
Outside, the snow thickened against the windows, but inside, everything felt still - safe.
I at first read this as “still safe”. Nice touch!

Quote
Chapter 2
The story’s short enough. I’ll just continue in one FDK posting.

Quote
Lois noticed. “What is it?”

He didn’t answer right away. “Nothing,” he murmured. “Probably just my imagination.”

But the furrow between his brows hadn’t eased.

Lois studied him for another beat, then sighed. “Alright. Grab the keys - I’ll double-check the kitchen.”

She turned heading down the hall.

Behind her, Clark moved–

And then–

Crack.

Not snow. Not thunder. Not the pop of a backfiring engine.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeep!

Quote
Just the sickening sound of impact.

He collapsed on top of her, shielding her as he always had - but…

He was heavy. Too heavy.
shock Was it…was it…green?

Quote
As if something had pierced more than his body.

And then pain - real pain.

A pain he couldn’t hide.

And in that instant, Lois knew.
You did a great job making it about 80% clear that it was Clark who was shot, not Lois, but there’s this 20% of doubt left. Great job!

Quote
“Clark - talk to me. Where are you hit?”

He winced, jaw clenched. “Back… left side…” His voice was low and tight with effort.
So, the sniper’s trying to get Superman’s attention by shooting kryptonite bullets?

Quote
Lois pushed to her feet and sprinted to the hallway cabinet. First aid kit. Kitchen drawer. She grabbed what she could - antiseptic, gloves, tweezers, a flashlight and a lead box they had bought months ago in an antique store - just in case.
Kind of sadly adorable clap

Quote
The bullet hadn’t gone through - it had shattered.
Possibly weakened by the window pane.

Quote
She worked carefully, methodically, the way she had once pried a Kryptonite bullet out of a stranger in a cape with only a letter opener.
Great mirroring to her earlier observation about the time when Lex’s Ex shot Superman.

Quote
But as she lifted the gauze the wounds hadn’t closed up. He wasn't healing. Instead, it had begun to bleed more, a dark, steady ooze that defied everything she knew about him.
/points at Tank Ending warning instead of a WHAM warning/

Quote
She pressed her hand against the wound, gently moving the tissue to look for more shards.
Gripping. [Linked Image]

Quote
He was shivering uncontrollably. Lois threw every blanket over him. Still not enough. His lips were pale, almost blue. She turned toward the fireplace, desperate to get a fire going.

Clark stirred under her hands. "Lois–"

"Shut up and breathe." Her voice broke slightly. "I’m almost done."
Eeeep!

Quote
And then he passed out.

~~~ \S/ ~~~
Chapter 3
She’s not going to take that well. And for that matter, so are we! Great cliffhanger pacing!
Quote
Stripping off her own sweater, Lois slid under the blankets and pressed herself close, curling around him as well as she could. He was ice-cold to the touch, but at least… at least the kryptonite seemed to have come out completely. She prayed that moving him hadn’t ripped anything.
[Linked Image]
“Just Us” – great title. Still, where’s Dr. Klein when you need him?
Quote
The woodpile was nearly gone.
Clark had meant to restock it. But the week had been full of rescues, emergencies… everything but time.
And then she saw it: the bag with the wooden rocking horse.
[Linked Image]
Quote
And then, as if summoned by dread, her gaze slid back to the bag in the corner.
The rocking horse.
A choice loomed before her.
~~~ \S/ ~~~

What will Lois do???
[Linked Image]

It’s clear to me that this isn’t Mary unless she completely switched her formatting and pacing, so I have to say, Kathryn, this is great work you did there clap

Quote
Option A
Don’t worry, I’ll do both!

Quote
For a few precious moments, a wave of heat radiated outwards, a fleeting warmth that momentarily pushed back the encroaching chill.
peep

Quote
"Lois..." he whispered, his voice barely a breath. "You... you always knew how to... keep me warm."
Awww…

Also, is it wrong to wonder if maybe there’s a kryptonite splinter embedded in the wood?

Quote
His eyes, fixed on hers, slowly lost their light, their focus blurring into a distant, empty gaze. His body went limp, a dead weight in her arms.
Eeeep!

Quote
Without the spark guard - forgotten in her panic - there was nothing to catch them. One ember landed on the rug. Another found the hem of a curtain. And in the blink of an eye, the room began to burn.
Oh dear! More Tankyness!

Quote
Their cars, lost in a white-out on an unseen patch of black ice, slid off the treacherous mountain road, plunging silently into the ravine below. No one would find them, no one would ever know.
Eeeeep!

Quote
Congratulations - you’ve chosen the Tank Ending, everyone is dead, you really shouldn’t have burned a piece of Clark’s childhood.
shock

[Linked Image]

This is kind of a layered whopper you did there. But you did confirm it was the author who intentionally went all Tanky there.

Quote
Option B
And now for the supposed happy ending?

Quote
Her voice cracked as she whispered into the space between them. “Come on, you stubborn farmboy. I didn’t fight off Kryptonite bullets and freezing wind and dig splinters out of you just for you to give up now.”
clap Fun Lois!

Quote
“Lois…”

Her heart stuttered.

“I’m here,” she choked out, cradling his face in both hands, kissing his cheeks, his forehead, anywhere she could reach. “I’m right here.”
Awwwww

Quote
He blinked slowly, as if it took effort, then gave her a weary, crooked smile. “I think so. Unless this is a really weird dream and you’re an angel with cold feet.”
Cold feet! Lois getting cold feet is another very clever multi-layered jibe clap

Quote
“Easy, honey.” He coughed - a dry, rasping sound - then cleared his throat. “I just woke up from almost dying - I don’t think I’m coherent enough to handle Lois Lane in full babble mode.”
laugh It’s sweet how you turned up the humor in the happy ending version!

Quote
Lois brushed her fingers through his hair, her touch tender. “Don’t you dare scare me like that again.”
Hey, it was Lois’s fault for almost getting shot!

Quote
“You’re warm. And soft. And you smell nice.”

A surprised laugh burst out of her, exhausted but genuine. “Wow. Nearly dies and still finds the energy to flirt. You must be feeling better.”
rotflol He got shot in the back, not… well… /gestures/

Quote
He gave her a lopsided smile. “I almost died. I deserve cuddles.”
laugh

Quote
“Cuddles, huh?” she teased, even as she was already climbing onto his lap and tucking herself into his side. “Is that the official medical term?”
Professional caregiving.

Quote
“I’m not going anywhere,” she whispered into his hair.

And neither was he.

The End
Awww… This was heavy stuff clap

Quote
Want:
- Angst
- A snow storm
- A wooden rocking horse
Ahhhhh… that’s why. Nicely done!

My guess stands as
Kathryn84
all thanks punctuation.

As for the prompts. Hmm… Another one where I can’t place the source huh

Chapter 1:

Loved this! Especially their banter! “Speak for yourself. I am a paragon of virtue and vocabulary.” - hah!!

“And admit it, you like watching me win.”

Clark chuckled, pulling her even closer. “I like watching you - I don’t need a reason.”

Lois leaned in, eyes dancing. “I noticed - that time we played strip poker.”

His brows lifted, playful. “I might’ve peeked.”

“I know you peeked.”

“I had to! You’re much better at bluffing than I am… It felt like my only chance.”

She smirked. “And what did I tell you?”

He kissed her cheek. “That next time I should give you advance notice so you could wear the good lingerie.”

Lois wrapped her arms around his neck as she pulled his face close to hers. “Exactly. I put effort into my victories.”

He chuckled, the fondness in his eyes softening the tease as he stepped closer. “You’re also completely impossible,” he murmured, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “And everything I ever wanted.”

I'm totally in love with this part!!!

Congratulations - you’ve chosen the Tank Ending, everyone is dead, you really shouldn’t have burned a piece of Clark’s childhood.

“You’re warm. And soft. And you smell nice.”

A surprised laugh burst out of her, exhausted but genuine. “Wow. Nearly dies and still finds the energy to flirt. You must be feeling better.”

He gave her a lopsided smile. “I almost died. I deserve cuddles.”

“Cuddles, huh?” she teased, even as she was already climbing onto his lap and tucking herself into his side. “Is that the official medical term?”

“Prescribed by the world’s leading expert in Lois Lane recovery,” he murmured, nestling against her shoulder, his voice going drowsy. “Best treatment plan I’ve ever had.”

They're so cute that my heart could melt! <3 (And for my own sake, I'll pretend I didn't read option A XD)
