This was fun. Of course Clark would show up with chocolate.

Given the specific details of location it had to be written by someone who has lived in Iceland, visited long enough to recall street and shop names (unless those are entirely made up), or did a lot of research. All of which means...

I still have no idea who wrote this.

I'm still a little mystified as to why Lois would be on vacation away from Clark and Metropolis in Iceland with Star, but this is such a sweet and funny story! I loved the bit about how the name of a chocolate bar had 17 syllables, haha.

And Clark showing up for a walk in the midnight sun with chocolate is just *chefs kiss*

This is so sweet. I'm betting on one of the European FoLCs as author of this story. Always loved Star and you did a tremendous job portraying her. So lovely with all the places and delicacies.

I would think

Hi Author!
Quote
The sun never really set in Reykjavík this time of year.
Okay, do I remember someone talking about visiting Iceland? No…

Quote
It was nearing midnight, but the sky outside the wide hotel window was still the softest, laziest shade of gold, like the day couldn’t quite make up its mind about ending.
Beautifully written!

Quote
Lois Lane sat curled up in an overstuffed armchair near the radiator, her sandals long kicked off, one hand bracing her lower back and the other resting protectively across her belly.
Pregnant.

Also, third person past tense.

Quote
She was exactly six months pregnant.

And she was irritated.
I guessed correctly. Although not *that* great a feat. Also, did Clark put her there for her own protection?

Quote
“Okay,” Star announced, entering the room with a victorious flourish. “There is a place downstairs that does sell chocolate, and I bribed the desk clerk to let me try it. Twice.”
Hmm…someone doing shorter works with yummy details.

Quote
Lois looked up hopefully. “Double fudge crunch?”
laugh

No clue. But I have been to Copenhagen for a conference once and they had incredibly rich chocolate brownies. Like 99% proof cocoa laugh

Quote
“Star. I love you. I really do. But unless that bar has two types of fudge, visible chunks of something that crunches, and enough sugar to send me into early labor, I don’t want it.”
Ooooh, really fun writing!

Quote
“Your third chakra is pulsing like a fax machine. That’s not ideal.”
She’s getting a message.

Quote
“Maybe because the last ‘snack run’ ended with salted fish jerky and a carton of what I thought was yogurt.”
shock

Quote
Star ignored her. “You’re pushing something down. I think it’s about the baby. Or Clark. Or licorice. It’s all tangled.”
Gah, who is this. It’s not exactly Mary’s style. And too short for Sara. Or Evie. Hmmm… Kathryn did lots of cultural foods last December. And married Lois. Hmm… the writing feels different from what I remember from Advent Calendar. Still… hmm…

Quote
Iceland was one of the top five happiest countries on Earth but Lois didn’t see how that could be the case when there were none of her favorite candy bars in sight.
rotflol yeah, there’s more humor and snark in this story than Advent Calendar.

Quote
“For a whole week?” Lois asked, unconvinced. “Vínberið?”

“Yes. They have the largest selection of chocolate in the country, so they say anyway.” Star offered.
And when Lois is done, they will be ruined. Not a single piece of chocolate left.

Quote
“We can try it.” Lois agreed, settling further into her bed, “but if it has licorice in it like the last ‘substitute’ you suggested, I can’t be held responsible for my actions.”
You know what, the last time I quoted most of a story, it was an Evie fic. And she also did Paris. And France kind of almost borders on Iceland. There’s no other countries stuffed in between. So, let’s call it an Evie and see if one of the longer fic makes me reconsider.

Quote
Lois picked up a bag, frowned, then dropped it like it burned. “Why does everything here involve licorice? I’ve never seen so much of it in one place.”
laugh

Quote
“I still think you should try the caramel-tarragon combo. It’ll clear your chakras.”
Ummm… if you get something that clears you out, I’m not sure it’s the best option right now.

Quote
Lois started making her way up the street. “I want my chakras gummed up with fudge and regret,” she deadpanned, grabbing a chocolate bar out of her tote.
Most excellent!

Quote
Three types of chocolate bars, two miniature boxes of truffles, and something labeled as “hazelnut mousse” that looked suspiciously like toothpaste in a tube.
Yummie!

Quote
“So,” she said, between bites, “on a scale of one to ‘emergency flight to Belgium,’ how desperate are we now?”
clap

Quote
“It’s a five,” she admitted. “Maybe a six.”

Star nodded, solemn. “That tracks. Your aura’s less stabby, but still tight around the solar plexus.”

“I think that’s called indigestion.”
rotflol

Quote
“I thought I’d be fine. Who knew I would be tired or moody or craving sugar?”
jawdrop

Quote
Turning onto Frakkastígur, she eventually found herself in front of Brauð & Co. She’d heard they had the best cinnamon rolls in the world and they certainly looked delectable in the window. Checking her watch, Lois found it was not even 1:45 yet. She still had nearly 5 hours before she could attempt to placate herself with pastry.
rotflol

Quote
A voice behind her said, “Penny for your cravings?”

She turned—then gasped.

“Clark?!”
He bring an emergency stash?

Also, m-dash sans spaces. And a question mark/exclamation mark combo.

Quote
“She said you were radiating snack-related desperation and hidden insecurity. I figured I should check.”

Lois blinked, then snorted. “Hidden insecurity?”
I guess, delicious like a DFCB comes to mind?

Quote
“Yeah, your kid’s a night owl. Already takes after you—zero concept of boundaries.”
laugh they wouldn’t be in this situation if he understood boundaries.

Quote
Clark produced a paper bag from inside his windbreaker with a smug look.

Lois gasped. “No.”
Awww … he brought her DFCB.

Quote
“I knew there was a reason I loved you.” She managed to say between bites. “You’re getting so lucky when we get home.”
rotflol

Quote
“She kicked like hell when I said it. So I think she agrees.”
Very cute!

Quote
“Nonsense. Out of the two of us, you’re the one who is a shoe-in to being an amazing parent.”
No, he hovers too much. Typical helicopter dad.

Quote
Lois leaned against him, eyes half-closed. “Don’t tell Star she was right.”

“About what?”

“Everything.” She smiled. “But especially the chocolate.”

The End
A most adorable story! And while the prompts had been specific, the take was most original. Star and Iceland, how do you get to that? thud

I’ll stick with JadedEvie until I need her for a longer story. Because I have realized she wouldn't change her hyphens. And there's a Prankster out there and so is an Elephant.

Prompt-giver: no idea as of now.

Star’s smile faltered. “Crunchy, yes. Fudgy? Debatable. It’s Icelandic, so it has a name with like seventeen syllables and an ‘æ’ in it.”

Bahahaha!! This line is golden! rotflol

Quote
Star hadn’t known about the lack of Northern Lights the same way Lois hadn’t known about the lack of Double Fudge Crunch Bars.

I love this phrasing! lol

Quote
“I want my chakras gummed up with fudge and regret,” she deadpanned, grabbing a chocolate bar out of her tote.

HAHAHA!! This one's great too! rotflol

Quote
“You are fearless,” Clark said quietly. “But that doesn’t mean you can’t be scared. Especially when you’re doing something new.”

Gahhhh! Love this line!

I have a few leads... but I'll come back later to edit in my guess. wink

Sara laugh

It was her last real adventure before the baby came, a girls-only summer getaway with Star who had insisted 0

This seems such a random thing for Lois to do, Star must have worked hard to talk her into this hehe.

Quote
“He’s not here, remember? And I told him not to come. Doctor said no flying this late into the second trimester.”

Huh? Clark can't fly because he is in his second trimester? Am I reading this wrong? help

Quote
The truth was... ever since the second pink line had shown up on that test, she’d been off-kilter.
So that's how she got talked into going to Iceland. Hehe!

Quote
“Why does everything here involve licorice? I’ve never seen so much of it in one place.”

I'm with Lois on this, licorice is foul!

Quote
There he was. Hands in the pockets of a windbreaker, glasses reflecting soft golden hues of the midnight sun. His hair was tousled from travel and he was smiling like he’d been planning this ambush for days.

Aww, I can really picture this scene! love

Quote
Inside were a handful of full-sized Double Fudge Crunch Bars. Real ones. Metropolis-made.

Husband of the year!

Quote
You’re getting so lucky when we get home.”

“Star already told me the aura said so.”

Heheheh!

I really liked this, a bit of a random thing for Lois to do but so fun to see Star, I wish we had more of her in the show and love how the author used her in this fic.
I wanted to guess
LoveTvFan
purely for the fact that in the 2023 ficathon she wrote a fic about L&C visiting Europe I think, so er, maybe she sent them to Iceland this time. But this is rather short for her so... idk again.

We need more stories with Star! She is absolutely hillarious. I geniunely wish we had seen more of her in the show. I love the idea of going to Iceland and Lois' complaints are SPOT ON in character.

Guessing these is SO hard.

Kaylle? Queen of the Capes? Darth Michael? Bah! I have no idea but those are my three.

I like that we got to see Lois and Star bonding . The part where They went to the candy store made me feel like I should book a trip to Iceland. The part where Clark showed up with the DFCBs was perfect .

This story is so deeply charming!

Quote
The sun never really set in Reykjavík this time of year.
Such a fun opening line!

Quote
“Star. I love you. I really do. But unless that bar has two types of fudge, visible chunks of something that crunches, and enough sugar to send me into early labor, I don’t want it.”
rotflol

Quote
“Maybe because the last ‘snack run’ ended with salted fish jerky and a carton of what I thought was yogurt.”
Oh, mercy.

Quote
It was her last real adventure before the baby came, a girls-only summer getaway with Star who had insisted Lois needed “northern light chakra realignment” or something.
SO CUTE! I love a universe where Lois and Star's friendship has endured.

Quote
Iceland was one of the top five happiest countries on Earth but Lois didn’t see how that could be the case when there were none of her favorite candy bars in sight.
Just such a fun characterization moment that also helps to set the scene.

Quote
Your husband literally tracked down an illegal arms dealer once with nothing but your shoe size and a phone bill.
Ok, well, now I want this story.

Quote
Pregnancy had a way of making everything feel bigger.
This is a deeply amazing observation. What a great way into her thoughts here.

Quote
The world didn’t feel like it was built for slowing down.
I'm so fascinated by this idea.

Quote
Apparently, the shopkeeper was not accustomed to having people staring at her as she unlocked the door, if the look on her face was any indication.
This is hilarious - I can picture it!

Quote
“When I got it as a gift from my grandma, I thought it was punishment.”
lol

Quote
“I want my chakras gummed up with fudge and regret,” she deadpanned, grabbing a chocolate bar out of her tote.
This is a Lois after my own heart. clap

Quote
Eventually, she pulled on her jacket, slipped out the door, and let the strange, golden twilight guide her toward the water.
This is lovely imagery and somehow so melancholy.

Quote
A voice behind her said, “Penny for your cravings?”
She turned—then gasped.
“Clark?!”
There he was. Hands in the pockets of a windbreaker, glasses reflecting soft golden hues of the midnight sun. His hair was tousled from travel and he was smiling like he’d been planning this ambush for days.
This was SUCH a great reveal, and such a satisfyingly sweet description. Even if he didn't have the chocolate bars on him, I think this would have done it.

Quote
“She said you were radiating snack-related desperation and hidden insecurity. I figured I should check.”
What a good friend! Lois has a great support system here.

Quote
She stepped forward and hugged him. Hard.
Ooof. This section tugs at the heartstrings.

Quote
“I wanted to.”
I love your Clark.

It was here that I realized I can't quote every single line from the rest of the story, Author. But this is a pitch perfect ending.

Quote
Clark shrugged. “I bet I can disappear before she ever sees me,” He said, wrapping Lois in a tighter embrace.
So sweet and romantic.

Quote
“Yeah, your kid’s a night owl. Already takes after you—zero concept of boundaries.”
rotflol Ouch is right! But I feel like I can feel the love in her voice.

Quote
Then his face softened. “I missed you.”
She exhaled shakily. “I missed you too.”
This is a great exchange. Maximum WAFFY.

Quote
Lois gasped. “No."
I figured out what's making this story so compelling for me. It's the familiarity - the care of really knowing someone, being able to predict them, and then acting to support/balance/care for them. Like knowing she'd want the chocolate bars, and bringing her a bunch of them. And adjusting his embrace for her belly in the hug earlier. And knowing he should check. It's really portraying an intimacy that comes from living with someone and paying attention to the details of their life. I feel like this is a great version of Clark because it makes him such a specifically good husband.

Quote
“I didn’t realize I was scared,” she murmured.
This whole section is great. And economical. There's such a trap to overwrite this kind of scene, and this is just delightfully in character and enough.

Quote
He met her gaze. “Always.”
Swoon.

Quote
“I’m still learning.”
Most Clark Kent reply EVER. lol

This was such a sweet and romantic read!

This was very cute and adorable. I really enjoyed Star here.

And Lois?

Aww, what a cute little pregLois fic. Super Clark to the rescue, as per usual. And Star! She's truly an underused character, and her voice is nailed perfectly in this.
And who doesn't know the feel that when you are in a foreign country you just don't find a food thats to your liking in certain locaitons? (tho I don't get Lois, Licrice can be neat...though I'd admit i wouldn't mi it with chocolate...) Iceland is kinda random here but sure why not? (also second Iceland fic in this Ficathon. Hmm.)
Guesses:
Hmm. This is tricky. Really not sure on who could have written this one. Most of the usual shortie candidates don't seem to fit this one style-wise or I have them down for something else. Given the whole foreign countries food/tradition schtick, I'm gonna go with
Demi
As for the prompter, I'm clueless.
Additional note: Another violation of requests. No Kryptonians. But here we have a Clark. Hmm...

Lovely little story. Anything with chocolate is good.

Super cute story. And I love Star! You wrote her really well here. And Lois being nervous about being a mom was so lovely, especially with Clark showing up just in the nick of time to reassure her with chocolate. 😊

This line was funny and I could see Star saying it. lol

I guess Lois was feeling Clark and chocolate withdrawal syndrome. Her mood improved after he showed up with the Double Fudge Crunch Bars. wink Nice story. Not sure about the author.

Thank you all for the wonderful feedback! It was so lovely to read everyone's take on this story. Iceland was indeed a random locale but Star is also random so I figured I'd give it a go and see what happened.

To be honest, when I first read the wants and don't wants, I was at a loss on how to begin. I don't have any experience to speak of writing stories that are not saturated with angst, so I was stressing about how in the world I could pull this off. My spouse and I had a two week holiday in Iceland while the ficathon was happening. While we were there, neither of us could find our go-to drinks. Everywhere we stopped, we were searching for them and that got me to thinking about Lois visiting somewhere DFCBs were not available. From there, the story wrote itself as I recalled some of our favorite places while we were there.

Thank you again for your comments and taking time to read this little tale.

With gratitude,
Purple
