Lavasoft has recently released a new version of its Ad-Aware anti-spyware program. Ad-Aware SE personal edition is available free for download here on the Lavasoft website.

It's much better than previous versions - I installed it last night and it finds stuff my old version didn't. Someone else on IRC, who was having lots of problems with spyware but the older Ad-Aware wasn't helping much, got everything off her machine after she installed the new version. Definitely worth getting!

Someone would be me - AdAware SE cleared up at least 6 *gigs* of spyware off of my computer, which my old version wasn't finding despite the fact I was updating it regularly.

The newer version is build 1501 version 1.05. if you don't have it it is worth getting it.

Are they still supporting it? I thought they were ending support for the free version, or was that just 6?

I have a few stupid spyware programs that keep coming back after I delete them. Have researched them in Google and deleted various registry files that tech support people advised deleting, but they are like bad pennies and keep turning up. Grrr.

Emily, I had some stuff like that too - I had to disconnect from the Internet, to into safe mode and edit the registry info from there. That got rid of them. If you're still connected to the internet when you delete some spyware files, they reinstall themselves. razz

As for Ad-Aware, I hadn't heard anything about stopping support for the free version, but since SE is out (and it definitely is free for personal use) it probably makes sense that they're not supporting version 6 any more.

How do you edit registry infomation? I know I have 5 spy files there, but I'm afraid to delete anything in case I do something really really wrong.

metwin1, if you're not sure what you're doing, it's perhaps best not to try to do it yourself. Actually deleting the files is simple: Ad-Aware, SpyBot or whatever other programme you're using will show you the line of code to remove and where it is, and all you do is go into the registry, find the line and click delete.

But editing the registry is a dangerous thing to do if you don't know what you're doing - it's only too easy to delete something important and then suddenly your computer won't work properly any more. If possible, find a friend who does know what they're doing and get them to do it for you; otherwise, see if someone here could talk you through it step by step.

But, first, are you sure that Ad-Aware or Spybot can't delete them for you? Try running either or both while you're not connected to the Internet and see if they'll get rid of them.
