I didn't clock is at first, but this is such a fun response to the location challenge because you're hitting all three important locations at once!
The chapel was quiet, tucked behind the hospital, with whitewashed walls and creaky floors that held the scent of old wood and lilies.
I love this description. I feel like 'old wood and lilies' tells me everything.
Ellen entered alone.
No one gave her away.
Nice job capturing the generational trauma that looks like Ellen hands down to Lois, after it was handed down to her.
She was almost thirty, and no stranger to silence that stung.
Oh, man, I felt that like a physical punch to the gut!
“Wanted to look the part.”
Awwwwww!
“You look like yourself,” she said. “That’s enough for me.”
I love this in particular because it somehow reminds me of Lois' 'whatever he can do, that's enough' line.
They promised things they didn’t fully understand: for richer, for poorer; in sickness and in health.
'Young and in love' has never looked more crushing.
I loved the whole tone of this. It was written with such hold and simplicity and feels like such devastation the whole time. Adding in the parents as an ominous harbinger of their ultimate ending is a great device.
