Teaser for Act 1: The Beginning

(March 30th 1962)

It started, like most things between them, with hope.

Jonathan had just taken over the farm after his father passed and Martha had traded city sidewalks for dirt roads and pastureland. The house they were going to live in was old, but it was theirs. Soon it would be echoing with laughter and the clink of dinner plates and the occasional burst of a country song crackling from the kitchen radio.

The church smelled like freshly mowed grass and lemon cake. The windows were open to let in the spring air and the white ribbons tied to the wooden pews fluttered slightly in the breeze. Outside, the sun turned the fields to gold. Inside, Martha Clark became Martha Kent.

It wasn’t a grand ceremony. Just neighbors, friends, family. Most of whom had known them since they were children. But to Jonathan, standing there in a clean suit that still smelled faintly of sawdust and to Martha, in a dress she’d sewn herself, it felt like the whole world had narrowed to that one moment. Her smile. His hand in hers. The promises they whispered.

“I want a big family,” Martha said, later that night, her head tucked beneath Jonathan’s chin as they rocked slowly on the porch swing. “Three, maybe four.”

“Four?” he laughed. “You planning to build us an extension?”

She poked him in the ribs. “You’re the one always saying this old farmhouse could use more life.”

He took her hand and kissed her knuckles, one by one. “Then let’s fill it with life.”

And then they disappeared into the house.
