I find it difficult to believe that none of y'all are reading anything besides fanfiction. So here's a review of one of my recent reads.
Whispers In The Dark by Pam Jernigan (yes,
that Pam Jernigan)
Karen leaves the compound to fetch books from the library, an errand complicated by the presence of Mindless - humans who are stronger than normal, heal much faster than normal, are hard to kill, but who cannot communicate and seem to exist to either infect or kill normals. Their party is attacked in the library and Karen is injured too badly to run, so she sets herself up as an expendable rear guard to allow her boyfriend and younger sister to escape. She shoots several Mindless and blocks the stairwell with their bodies, but another climbs over the stack as her pistol runs dry. Instead of attacking her, though, he covers her with his body and protects her from the rest of the Mindless group. Then - unheard of - he carries her to safety. The rest of the book shows Karen and Leo (the not so mindless Mindless) connecting as friends and learning to trust each other. Together they discover the reason there are Mindless in the first place and start the Normals and Mindless on a journey to healing together. Tight romance story with believable (within the fictional world) action and adventure. No sex, no profanity, surprisingly little violence, and a happy ending dictated by the romance genre. I recommend this book.
The above is my personal review, not from the publisher or some schlock artist or bot. This book really is well-written. Pam, if you're still haunting these boards, thank you for this offering.
