Hi 90stvfangirl!
Originally I was just going to end it sooner, you’ll see where.
Oh?

. “Yeah? Well, I still think of you as my copy boy most days.”
Instead of the boy who brings in fresh copy?
Jimmy groaned. “I’m almost fifty, Lois.”

Jimmy’s stomach twisted as realization dawned on him. It was Friday night.
“Date night, isn’t it?” he said softly.
Eep, I was feeling worried before because it was Jimmy instead of Clark. Date night will be in the cemetery, won’t it?
Lois nodded, her pen poised over the page. “Comes around fast, doesn’t it?” she murmured, eyes still fixed on her work.
Hmm… you make it sound like a weekly occasion, but it also feels like an anniversary. Hmm…
He smiled. “Of course! Just… don’t forget to say hi from me, okay?”
Yep, Clark’s dead

Lois slipped inside the dimly lit hospital room, setting her purse down on the uncomfortable chair she’d grown far too accustomed to over the past five years.
Okay, weekly occurrence. And not dead. But is it Clark or Lex?
“Hey, Farmboy,” she murmured. “I’m here.”
Okay, probably not Lex.
“Missed you this week,” she said. “Laura had the baby. We’re… grandparents! Can you believe it? Where does the time go?”
eeep! That’s about 26 years after the finale.
He just couldn’t wake up.
Maybe Tempus had his soul trapped in a bottle somewhere?
“I’m being as patient as I can with you, Clark.” Lois swallowed the sudden lump in her throat.

She turned and dragged the hideous chair closer to the bed,
Nice use of an adjective to mirror the situation as a whole.
“All you have to do is wake up…”
****
You might have stopped here.
A sharp gasp tore from Lois’s throat as she jolted awake, her heart pounding in her chest.
Or went with this scene, landing it after the first wake-up.
“You jerk!” Her fist connected with his shoulder.

”Nothing. Just a dream,” she said in a small voice, feeling embarrassed for getting so worked up over a dream. A horrible dream, at that—but still, just a dream, right?
It’s very telling that she dreamt and is mad about a dream where he was comatose instead of one where she caught him with Linda King as they ‘celebrate’ their Keith Award.
She closed her eyes, but the dream lingered, keeping her awake for hours.
The end.
Poor dear! And I’m sticking to my initial guess about the original cut off.
Lois’ hand found his under the covers, and she clutched it in hers, her thumb tracing over his wedding ring.
If you had needed another shocker, you could have gone with “where his wedding ring used to be”.

TBH I was just going to kill him off.

It’s been a while since we had a dream-sequence!

Funny aside, they most often show up on the dark side
