As for this first part, there are two absolutely priceless passages in it. I just loved this:
Lois swallowed hard against the rejection-sized bruise mottling her heart.
Awww...
And I loved this, too:
Lois swallowed har, doing her best to focus on the red light in front of her. Difficult, seeing as how it was underwater.
