Maybe his aura only prevents damage to his uniform, not contact with it. So when smoke or oil sludge or whatever contacts the suit the aura also makes it very resistant to modification (cleaning) until after he takes it off.
In other words, the suit can get dirty as easily as Clark can, but the stain doesn't set until he takes off the suit? wink
