Great part, Corrina clap.

I've been so excited to read this story--what a treat to see more posted this morning.

I really enjoyed the feel of their evening together in the warehouse. Finding out all Clark has sacrificed for Lois, all he has planned. How he's--for two years --been right there through it all. Risking himself for her.

I'm so glad Lois is noticing, seeing all Clark has and will do to protect her. She's aware of everything. She has so much knowledge of the strength of Clark's love for her. The reality check she is getting here is amazing--so full circle. Done in such a way that is really pulling at the heart.

You've done a really great job of having Clark walk that 'line'...loving her, but keeping the distance he thinks he needs. He's written very well notworthy.

The last moments together--hearing the rat(s)--brought that little bit of relief to the stress of the situation, brought down the walls just a bit. So glad you ended with them feeling a little like 'them'.

Loving it, Corrina smile

Absolutely loving this story, Corrina.

He had to maintain the wall. He had to keep the distance between them. He had to pretend he was OK with 'being friends'.

Because the one thing time hadn't dulled was his irrepressible attraction to the woman he would always love with his whole heart.

That was just heart wrenching. You do an incredible job of bringing the characters to life. I can just picture this pale shadow of Clark.

Bravo.

I like that we got a bit of Clark's POV here. I'm really intrigued, though, by what Lex does and doesn't know. Clark says his strength is returning, so his powers have been taken (I assume while in the Kryptonite-laced cell). Luthor doesn't know Clark's identity, and neither does Lois. So Lex is beating Clark up to keep Lois in line because...does he know Clark has feelings for Lois? Because now we finally know that, even though Clark has been pretending he doesn't, he's only doing that for her protection. Great part - you've got me hooked. smile

I'm glad that you've pointed this out, because it made me think, too: we know that two years have passed since Lois' wedding, but in the series Superman/Clark is convicted in the kryptonite cage only for the time of the ceremony... Shall we suppose that he's still affected by that exposure after all this time? My guess is that something else must have happened in the meantime, but maybe I'm just missing something here...

Or maybe he was in the cage for much longer than just the ceremony.

Lois surveyed the room. Its small size and low ceiling fostered a closed-in feeling. The dim candlelight did nothing to hide the cobwebs, dust, and general grime. She looked at Clark and smiled. "How did you find this place?"

This might be a small and dingy place, but it is one sheltered by love, even if these two people are incapable of admitting that little fact to each other.

They are in a tight spot and eventually Luthor's goons will find them.

Wonder when H.G. will show up?

Next part?

A writer's job is to think of new plots and create characters who stay with you long after the final page has been read. If that mission is accomplished than we have done what we set out to do, which is to entertain and hopefully educate.

Very exciting part. So sad that Clark keeps pulling away from Lois, but understand this. After two years of forcing himself from staying away from her for HER safety, I get that.

I don't think that Clark's still suffering from the cage. It sounds like to me that Lex's thugs carry Kryptonite on them so that Superman can't interfere with their "business". It might also be why Superman isn't around in Metropolis anymore. With so many low levels of Kryptonite everywhere Clark goes, he can feel when he's getting close to the thugs or when they're going to attack. Although, why isn't he helping out elsewhere?

I hope Lex doesn't find them in Clark's hidey-hole.

Wow, very powerful chapter! clap

But Lois wasn't convinced anything here had been left to chance. Clark had planned meticulously. He had prepared everything to the smallest detail.

He had stayed in Metropolis ... seemingly because there was a chance that, one day, she would need him.

Centennial Park swept through her memory again. The bench. Clark - hopeful, earnest, desperate to stop her making a huge mistake. And her - blind to the sort of man Luthor was.

And blind to Clark, too.

Lois and Clark doing a very complicated dance of their emotions and feelings. Clark lovingly preparing a safe place for the possibility no matter how remote Lois would need it. And struggling to maintain the facade of friend, while his meticulous preparations show Lois just how much he cares. Nice to see she can see though it!

Lois swivelled silently and stared at his back.

She wondered if he realised that he now slumped a little, whereas before he had stood straight. She wondered if he knew that his eyes were continually downcast, whereas before he had met the world straight on. She wondered if he knew that his mouth never broke into that trademark smile.

She wondered if he knew that she understood the extent of the damage done by her decision to trust a man utterly unworthy of trust.

What a beautiful way to describe Lois's enlightenment.

Quote
"Clark," Lois said. "I'm so sorry."

"None of this is your fault."

"It's all my fault. I should have been able to see the truth. You tried to show me."

Lois taking responsibility for her actions, even though she hasn't actually taken them yet.

Quote
Outside of their haven, the scratches and scuffles continued.

But they didn't matter.

Because she was with Clark.

Lois recognizes her safe haven with Clark. What a wonderful way to end this chapter. dance

Corrina,

It's been 30 days since we left our beloved couple in a dank basement complete with a dust-filled old mattress, powdered milk, and scurrying rats. cry Looking forward to more of the ambiance... or not! help Like Groobie, I'm hooked. Can't wait to read the next installment.

The good news: I'm still writing this fic.

The bad news: Progress is slow.

I have the usual excuses regarding RL, although in the past month, TWO of my sons have become engaged, which is probably reasonably rare.

Part 6 is back from Iolanthe (has been for a couple of weeks), but I was trying to get most of Part 7 written before posting Part 6. Then all the kids came home for the weekend and my son announced his engagement, some old friends came to stay to celebrate her 50th birthday, another son came to stay and also announced his engagement, and I'm just back from a weekend in the city that we've been meaning to do for over a year.

Thanks for interest and patience. I'm hesitant to make promises, but I'll try to have Part 6 posted within 48 hours.

Corrina.
