...to the boards about 15 minutes ago?
It was a really polite message, once I translated it.

I saw it last night. But it was better this morning.
Lois: You know, I have a funny feeling that you didn't tell me your biggest secret.
Clark: Well, just to put your little mind at ease, Lois, you're right. Ides of Metropolis

I saw it last night and it hasn't gone away since. I think there's something wrong with the internet server at my school because once I got off campus (I'm sitting at Starbucks right now), I could access it just fine. But I guarantee if I went back to school and tried to log on, I'd get the error message again.

As far as we know, this is an intermittent DNS error. Our webhost has been looking into this, but most of the time by the time he gets to check out the problem it's been resolved... so there's not a lot he can do about it by then. We assure everyone that this is NOT a virus, or a Denial of Service attack, or a hijack of our IP, or anything like that. We have a request in to get our IP address changed, which should eliminate these issues. In the meantime, please copy these instructions and if you have this problem again, or if anyone emails you who is having the problem, do this: 1. open a command prompt (START >> RUN >> Type CMD >> Click OK. 2. run this command: ipconfig /flushdns 3. run this command: ipconfig /registerdns 4. Try launching again. Hope this helps! Wendy Boards Admin Team

Depending on how I sign onto the internet depends on whether I get the Chinese characters. I just finished configuring my new Verizon DSL service. Coming to the site through Verizon the site is fine. But whether through Dial-up or DSL if I come to the site using AOL I get the Chinese characters. So it must be a browser problem for each individual user. Not a LnC Boards problem.

It was a really polite message, once I translated it. What did it say? "A good horse is like a member of the family"?
When in doubt, think about penguins. It probably won't help, but at least it'll be fun.

wish that I would have...wait a minute, maybe a can! /sounds of frantic clicking and trolling through internet history...sounds of muttering
sigh, the website that I used for the translation didn't have a record...
Anyway, It was a very polite message.
something like.
Friendly {something} prompt.
Regretfully, the page you are looking for is not available. There seems to be a DNS (I can't remember the next part, but they were bending over backward to not say 'issue' or 'problem'). Respectfuly, contact your administrator.
or something like that, If I get it again(please nooooo) I will endvor to get the granslation again.

If this happens again before they switch the IP address and anyone is using a Mac, try doing this. It worked for me:
If you have a Mac running OSX, bring up a terminal window and type the following:
lookupd -flushcache

I got the Chinese thingy too. I was shocked for a moment. Thought I was being re-directed to some hackers-site or something (I once got a similar trouble with another forum board which got re-directed to some porn site)
But then I mailed to Labrat and got this very solution Wendy has posted.
It worked!

Hah, a polite message huh?
I cleared out my browser histories, closed them, and reopened Firefox, and the site came back to me. No worries.

I couldn't access the boards for about twenty hours. Flushing and registering dns didn't seem to help.

Today's outage has been brought to you by the letter's D, N and S. This is what the web host had to say: webhost: we had a little dns problem today because the dns restart script caused a problem for both dns's to stop/start at the same time. during the restart, dns 2 was looking for dns 1 which was also restarting and both quit working!! webhost: the restart was set up at the same hour/minute/second on both servers and i think thats the cause of the hang up today. Since he's started doing this restart I've heard no complaints, but when they both went down, that's what caused today's outage. He's trying his best here and I can't fault the hardware. Hopefully we'll get through this rough patch. Thank you for hanging in there.
