Thanks for posting this wonderful tribute to the early larger-than-life (but not quite superhero) characters who may have provided inspiration to Siegel and Shuster.
Joy, Lynn
p.s., I recognize Popeye on the far left and I'm pretty sure the far-right character is supposed to be Alley Oop. I fear I don't know the characters in the middle; could anyone enlighten me?

#1 Popeye the Sailor Man? #5 Tarzan of the Apes?
#1 Popeye - because he's "strong at the finich" and Superman doesn't even have to eat spinach?
#5 - Tarzan - because he's strong too? Because he has an alternate identity as John Clayton, Lord Greystoke?

I saw it on Facebook and it wasn't labeled. My read is Popeye, Shadow, Phantom, Buck Rogers, Tarzan. The Phantom seems a little wrong to me, there has been 21 generations so there should just be a new one.
There is a crossover I've never seen. Lois missing in Africa and the Phantom. Someone please write it.

Thanks for filling in the missing characters.
And yeah, I guess the last guy would be Tarzan and not Alley Oop. I had thought that the caveman had looked rather narrow-shouldered compared to his younger self; but if the last figure is not Alley after all, that would explain things...

It's funny not just on the obvious level either. The respective BRANDS of the characters are represented as well. These are all once famous characters, but their popularity is much diminished. If the cartoon universe had celebreality shows, they'd be on them. Yet Superman remains popular even 70+ years later, still young and vigorous.

I have to agree with Shayne. As part of the "under 30" crowd (at least until October!) I only recognized Popeye among the old characters.
