(NOTE: No, I'm not skipping Mother's Day)

I've discovered I have a lot of songs about family on my computer. I've decided to divide them into sections and make cds for my immediate family. This is is the "Fathers and Sons" part.

Creed - With Arms Wide Open
Elton John - Blessed
The Game - Like Father, Like Son
Will Smith - Just The Two Of Us
Josh Groban - You Raise Me Up
You've Got A Friend In Me (from the Toy Story Soundtrack)
Cat Stevens - Father And Son
The Temptations - Papa Was A Rolling Stone
Billy Joel - Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel)
(Lion King, Broadway Soundtrack) Circle of Life
(Lion King, Broadway Soundtrack) Endless Night
(Lion King, Broadway Soundtrack) He Lives in You
Luther Vandross - Dance With My Father
Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven
Elton John - The Last Song b/w a Father and His Son
Josh Groban - Remember Me (from the Troy Soundtrack)

My plan is to burn the cd and give a copy to my dad and my brother (a father of four - all boys so far) for Father's Day with a CD booklet containing the lyrics and my reason for including the song. I'm willing to buy a few more songs if the one's I have seem odd. I'm looking for feedback on the order and the song choice. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hey Capes,

I'm actually working on a "Fathers and Daughters" version that includes that song, but it's actually much harder now that I've done the first b/c so many of the songs overlap (ex. "Blessed" "Remember Me"). Thanks for the suggestion though!

Papa Was a Rolling Stone seems like an odd choice to me, because iirc it's about an absent father who didn't spend time with his family. Not really the message you want for Father's Day wink

Good point, Kaylle, thanks! Well, that frees up about 7 mins...

PS: Love the Gargoyles support. That show was awesome!

Mara,
I am not sure about the name of the song, but I have heard a song out recently on the local Christian station. It's a guy singing, and would be perfect for Father's Day.

OK, cool! I googled it and found it. It's by a guy named Mark Harris, and the song is called Find Your Wings. I thought it was so beautiful I was crying. Of course I am also expecting another child currently, so that might be the reason why I cried also. blush But it even hits me as one that could inspire a fanfic. I could really hear Clark saying this to a kid he would have. (esp. the flying thing. lol)

EDIT: OKay, I couldn't stop myself and wrote a vignette inspired by the song lyrics. I've called it Love's Wings. I've sent it to Labby to beta. It's as cheesy as this song. whinging So now it actually *did* inspire a fanfic.

Anyway, here are the lyrics. They are not mine. They belong to Mark Harris, no copyright infringement intended.

"It's only for a moment you are mine to hold
The plans that heaven has for you
Will all too soon unfold
So many different prayers I'll pray
For all that you might do
But most of all I'll want to know
You're walking in the truth
And If I never told you
I want you to know
As I watch you grow

Chorus:
I pray that God would fill your heart with dreams
And that faith gives you the courage
To dare to do great things
I'm here for you whatever this life brings
So let my love give you roots
And help you find your wings

May passion be the wind
That leads you through your days
And may conviction keep you strong
Guide you on your way
May there be many moments
That make your life so sweet
Oh, but more than memories

Chorus:

It's not living if you don't reach for the sky
I'll have tears as you take off
But I'll cheer as you fly

Chorus:

You don’t have to…
You don’t have to hide
Come out, come out wherever you are
You don’t have to hide
Come out, come out
Come out wherever you are
You don’t have to hide
You don’t have to…

(Elrond's blessing at the departure of the company from Rivendell)

"Farewell, and may the blessing of Elves and Men and all Free Folk go with you.
May the stars shine upon your faces!"
