What does the N in Nfic stand for?

Mulder: Imagine if you could come back and take out five people who had caused you to suffer. Who would they be?
Scully: I only get five?
Mulder: I remembered your birthday this year, didn't I, Scully?

As I understand it the "N" stands for "naughty" meaning it contains sexual situations that are inappropriate for anyone under age 18 to read.

"Let us remember that there is a creative force in this universe, working to pull down the gigantic mountains of evil, a power that is able to make a way out of no way and trasform dark yesterdays into bright tomorrows. Let us realize the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."

It does indeed stand for naughty, but I've always found this a bit of a misnomer really. It was coined when nfic was almost exclusively fluffy and fun romps and vignettes and although there are still nfic like that written today, I think the genre has expanded some over the years to include nfic which is more sensual and waffy and even poignant at times.

These days too nfic really means any story which is beyond pg13, so the occasional fanfic which has a violent theme will find it's way into the nfic folder too.

Aramis: Yes, sorry.
Athos: No, no, by all means, let's keep things suicidal.

"You told me you weren't like other men," she said, shaking her head at him when the storm of laughter had passed.
He grinned at her - a goofy, Clark Kent kind of a grin. "I have a gift for understatement."
"You can say that again," she told him.
"I have a...."
"Oh, shut up."

In my mind, the "N" always stood for "night"

- because the kiddie shows are during the day, but adult shows are at night

- because if you're all alone you might settle in to bed at night with a good romance novel

- because if you're not alone, you make love at night

I honestly thought that was what the N stood for!
