QUOTES

QUOTE #1
"The reading material." She sat down next to him and picked up the magazine on the table in front of them. "This copy of *Metro Woman* is like two years old. What's the point in reading this if it's outdated?" She leaned forward in her seat, rubbing her temples to help calm her nerves down.

QUOTE #2
"It is over," Clark insisted stubbornly. "Everything's going to go back to the way it was before."

QUOTE #3
"You're tellin' me the problem," Perry said, smacking his desk impatiently. "I *know* the problem. What I want is a *solution*!"

QUOTE #4
"I promise. I'll be in and out," I say, giving her my most sincere, Boy Scout look.

QUOTE #5
"I find a good ear-tug and a slap to the back of the head work well with Clark," responded Martha with some much needed humor. "But then again, I am his mother."

QUOTE #6
"Don't you remember my telling you that I'm adopted? Well, I am. It's just that my birth parents were a little farther removed than for most orphans."

QUOTE #7
She opened the door and he stepped into the hall. "Oh, and Joe?" He turned to look at her. "My name is Lois."

QUOTE #8
"You're there to make me look good, Clark. Get a tux."

QUOTE #9
He shivered in response. "Oh god, Lois. Your beeper...is going off."

QUOTE #10
"Great!" Martha said, clapping her hands in excitement. "It's been a couple of weeks since I rode a chopper. Do you have an extra helmet?"

EXCERPTS

EXCERPT #1
"I call it the 'Illuminator.' Catchy, huh? This will detect anything radioactive by illuminating the source," Dr. Klein said as he moved towards Clark with the device. "Here, I'll show you. You see how Clark's chest has those blue specks? Those are traces of radioactivity. Let's see, it seems to be mainly in the area where you were shot. I don't see any other areas that have been affected." Dr. Klein turned the light back on and turned the device off.

EXCERPT #2
My hand fell away from his as if burned and my jaw dropped almost to the table when he let out a gasp of pain and tugged free of my touch. The awkward way he held his arm against his side tilted his hand and revealed what looked like a crisscrossing of burns across his palm. The pain evident in his eyes revealed the truth behind his slow, stilted movements. The way he turned away from me, hiding the depths of his reaction, revealed his reluctance to let anyone know that he'd been hurt.

EXCERPT #3
"I think it's worth a try," Perry said. "We live in a city with its own resident flying superhero. Folks here are conditioned to believe the unbelievable."

"Maybe," Clark conceded, "but there's still a risk, Chief. This could blow up in our faces. In *my* face for sure and maybe in yours, too, if the Planet backs me up." He looked at Perry hopefully. "Do you really think...do you really think she loves me?"

EXCERPT #4
Once again, I take to the sky, eager to leave the city behind me, feeling that it might suffocate me if I stay any longer than I already have.

It's funny, when I think about it. I *should* be happy. I *should* be completely ecstatic. I *should* be out somewhere, celebrating.

EXCERPT #5
"Stop it." Lois chuckled under her breath, still flipping through her magazine. "What will the pilots think if we take off early?"

"I'm not..." And then Clark realized he was and he let go of the armrests. "Sorry. Force of habit," he apologized sheepishly.

EXCERPT #6
"Remember the night at the Daily Planet right after we met," he said after several long seconds. "The time that I brought you Chinese food for dinner?"

She smiled weakly. "A good horse is like a member of the family," she quoted.

EXCERPT #7
They both stood, and Lois escorted him to the door. "You're right, I am beat. It was a full day." She stopped at the door. "Tomorrow is my day off. Why don't you come by about ten o'clock and we can make a day of it. I'll show you all the real sights of Metropolis as only a native can."

EXCERPT #8
Clark stood on the sidewalk and watched her and that fantasy-inducing dress climb the stairs to her building. He stayed in that spot, listening to the soft swish of the fabric as she climbed the stairs inside. He heard her open her door, step inside, and kick off her shoes. Her footfalls were softer as she walked in the direction of her kitchen. There was the faint sound of her refrigerator door opening.

EXCERPT #9
Lois turned just in time to see her partner take the seat beside her. He was a little hesitant, unsure of how she might react to his presence after their earlier fight. She leaned into him with her shoulder, needing the contact between them as she offered him silent reassurance.

EXCERPT #10
A slow, easy smile spread across Clark's face. He leaned down and whispered in her ear, "There is only *one* member of the Lane family I want to have 'combat' with. But since we have to wait a little while longer, is there anything I can do to make the rest of Friday night better?"

"My wife's love is what unites Krypton and Earth in my heart. Without it, without her, I truly would be in hell."
