Welcome to the quiz for Best Relationship Story, brought to you by Erin! [Smile]

This category is for relationship fics that are over 50k. There is one story in this quiz, though, that is under 50k, but it's part of a series, and it just seemed to me to put this series of smaller fics together as one since they're all related. (There's a hint for you quiz takers! wink )

SPIFFY DISCLAIMER THINGY! All the stories featured in this quiz qualify for the Best Relationship Story, but this quiz is not a stamp of recommendation for nomination. There are other stories which qualify for this category, but I have limited myself to twelve.

Please make recommendations for other eligible stories not included in this quiz! I love to get story recommendations. They give me a heads up about good stories that I have either missed or haven't yet read. So please toss in those recommendations for me and for others!

QUIZ RULES: Two points for getting the story and author from the quote; one point for getting it from the excerpt. Specify which is which, or you'll automatically get one point instead of two. Open hard drive and archive, *don't* forget to snip the excerpts in your replies, and don't forget the spoiler space when you post in the Kerth Best Relationship Stor Quiz answer thread.

The DEADLINE for entries for this quiz is Wednesday, February 24th by 11:59 p.m. Results will be posted on Thursday morning.

More elaborate quiz instructions can be found here.

Now that we've dispensed with the rules and other relative information, here we go!

Quote 1:
Lois slapped the file on the desk and stood, crossing her arms
defensively. "I stopped by your place this morning. I realized
that you'd been snowed in for real and wanted to take you to
breakfast. Clark, I saw you through the window." At his
bewildered look, she sighed impatiently. "You had company –
someone that I didn't expect to be at your place this morning –
and an engagement ring."

Quote 2:
"I'm Clark Lane," he said as vehemently as he could. "I have a
family. Parents. Friends."

Quote 3:
"Lane isn't lucky," Henderson replied drolly. "She's immortal.
If it were possible to kill that woman she'd be dead a hundred
times over by now."

Quote 4:
"You think?" Clark joined in his wife's banter. "I kinda liked
the way you showed me how much you appreciate my writing ... so
much better than a Kerth, but I might need a lot more
convincing."

Quote 5:
"Weird?" Martha gave a small laugh. "What's weird about it?
Honestly, I knew it would take time, but I had been hoping this
would happen since shortly after you moved back to Metropolis."

Quote 6:
"No. It's Lois. L-O-I-S. Not Louis. L-O-*U*-I-S. Lois." I glared
at the woman seated in front of me. "Lois Lane. Lane. As in Dr.
Sam Lane. As in Lane Hall and Lane Athletic Center and the Ellen
Lane Memorial Medical Building."

Quote 7:
He turned away as if dismissing them. As the women walked across
the club floor to the stage, Ramona leaned towards Connie and
whispered, "I'm pretty sure he's not gay."

Quote 8:
"It's my fault, you know. All of it," Lois said sadly. "If
Luthor hadn't wanted me so badly he never would've destroyed the
Planet. I just don't understand why. I mean, I know he was a sick
man, but why me?"

Quote 9:
For just an instant she looks thoughtful. Then a smile leaks
through and with a touch of humor in her voice she asks, "So Mr.
Kent, are you finally acknowledging who the leader is in our
partnership?"

Excerpt 1:
"…Something that is going to take a lot of explanation and
some significant groveling on my part. Trust me, though. I'm not
in love with Mayson."

"You're not?"

He shook his head and raised his other hand to frame her face
and stepped closer to her. "I'm not. I'm in love with someone
else."

Lois saw again that same look of unreserved adoration. Like the
night before, she felt cherished and completely loved, but
instead of scaring her, those deep emotions thrilled her, filling
her with a deliciously warm feeling. It was like she'd been given
not only a second chance at life, but all of those disappointing
Christmases from years past were washed away with this one joyful
gift.

"And who do you love?" she whispered.

His eyes twinkled as he grinned tenderly at her. "I think you
know."

Excerpt 2:
Clark's eyebrow's climbed into his hairline. "Smallville?!" he
whined to Perry, startled. "Why am I going to *Smallville*?"

"Because I'm the editor and I said so," Perry told him, turning
back to the paper on his desk, a sure sign that the conversation
was over.

Clark sighed and headed back to the bullpen. He was a city boy,
born and bred. Well, not born -- maybe, he didn't know; he was a
foundling after all and who knew if they had cities on Krypton --
but certainly bred. Sure, he'd disappointed his dad when he'd
decided to become a reporter instead of going into medicine but
it had turned out well. His dad was proud of him. Winning a Kerth
his rookie year sure hadn't hurt.

Excerpt 3:
"I want to fly with you along the Great Wall," he whispered as
he kissed her cheek. "I want to walk through the ruins of Ephesus
with you." He kissed her neck. "I want to kiss you on the top of
the Eiffel Tower." He captured her lips in a fierce kiss. "And
make love to you on a black sand beach in Costa Rica." He sucked
gently on the lobe of her ear before pulling back to look at her
with passion-darkened eyes. "And I want to watch the sunrise with
you on this little island in the South Pacific that no other
human being has ever set foot on before." A ripple of pleasant
tingles cascaded down her spine as she imagined the warm sand,
his soft skin, his hands, his lips…

She shook her head in wonder. "Is that all?" she asked, her
voice unsteady.

He looked at her with a straight face but a mischievous glint in
his eyes. "Well, it's a lot for one night, but if there's
something else you wanted to do, I'm sure we could work it in."

Excerpt 4:
"Clark," she called, alerting those colleagues who hadn't
already noticed his entrance. "I'm glad you made it in."

Clark's startled glance settled on her, his body appearing to
freeze as others turned to look in his direction. Lois quickened
her pace as she willed him to move down the ramp to meet her.

"What do you think of the new bullpen?" Reaching the bottom of
the ramp, she was grateful to see Clark walking toward her,
though with less than his easy stride. She felt a presence by her
shoulder and wasn't surprised when she heard Jim's voice.

Excerpt 5:
I nodded. "Just don't... wait for me, I guess," I said quietly.
"I am so far from ready to be in a relationship."

Clark nodded. "I wouldn't expect anything different. But Lois...
I need to be honest with you, too. I'm not really interested in
anyone else, so..."

"Just as long as you won't stop yourself from looking because of
me," I said. "I can't promise that I'll ever be ready."

"You will be," Clark smiled at me. "Maybe by the time you are,
you won't feel the same way towards me, but you have too much to
give to not fall in love again someday."

"And if that happens?" I asked him. "With someone else?"

"I'll still be your best friend if you'll let me," Clark said.

Excerpt 6:
My mind wandered back to the whole 'Incredibles' thing.

I'd seen the previews and all that, even if I hadn't seen the
movie yet. The basic premise was that there were superheroes with
secret identities.

Could I do something like that someday?

I helped when I could without threatening my identity or
anything like that. It wasn't much. I stopped a mugging a few
weeks earlier, but that was mostly just because I'd shown up, not
because I'd done anything special.

It was definitely something to keep in the back of my mind and
talk to Mom about sometime. I didn't think I'd do anything before
I graduated from college. And there was the whole Lana thing to
deal with, too.

Excerpt 7:

Linda King leaned over his shoulder and put her hands on his
upper arms. "So how'd it go at the Metro Club last night,
Clark?"

"I start this afternoon as the new bartender."

She turned him around in his chair, then reached out and stroked
his fake beard. "I like it," she purred. "Too bad it's not real.
Maybe you could grow a real one after this assignment's over.
You'd look even better than you do already."

He leaned away while trying not to look like he was leaning
away. "I'll think about it, okay, Linda?"

Perry popped out of his office and bellowed, "King! Kent! In
here now!"

Excerpt 8:
"Superman." He said it flatly but there was just a hint of a
twinkle in his chocolate eyes.

She chuckled. "A pretty face and a flashy costume? Nah. Besides,
being known as his girlfriend is a little on the dangerous
side."

"What about your three rules?" he asked.

She shrugged. "Rules are meant to be broken, aren't they?"

"Does that mean you'll go out with me?"

"You mean, like on a date? Get dressed up and not talk about
what we're working on?" Lois asked coyly.

He nodded.

"That works for me," Lois said with a grin. "My mom needs time
to recover from my last wedding anyway."

Excerpt 9:
As she closes the door the rest of the way, her smiling face is
barely visible as I hear her final words of the night. "Good
night, Clark."

As I'm staring at a closed door, I'm not intending to eavesdrop
but I'm still so tuned to her voice that I think I could hear her
from across the city. I hear a whisper from the other side of the
door.

"He loves me."

I wish I could see her face. When she said those words, she
didn't sound unhappy at all.

I hope that very soon she'll feel ready to say those words to
me.
