Hey all! It's that time of year again and since the holidays - at least here in the States - *officially* start tomorrow, it's time for the Holiday Ficathon sign-ups!

Elisabeth and I are going to co-coordinate that way we can both participate without knowing who our ficathon fic is coming from wink .

Rules for this year [stolen shamelessly - then slightly edited - from the rules last year which were probably snagged from the other thread where they were stolen from Wendy...]:
Quote
Rules for Writers:

Note that stories don't *have* to be Christmas stories. Unless the request you get states it specifically, of course. It would be fun if stories had a Holiday theme, but I'm not going to limit anyone's inspiration by requiring them to be centered around Christmas. Carol adds: If you have a holiday preference/non-preference either in the fic written for you or in what you'll write, please include it in your form

1. Sign ups end December 3th (that's a full week from now).

2. In order to sign up, email your completed form (located just a little further below) to carolmfolc@gmail.com with the subject "ficathon."

3. Assignments will be given out no later than Dec. 6.

4. Stories should be at least 750 words in length.

5. You can start posting your stories as soon as you're ready. You can post them yourself, just make sure posts are labeled "ficathon" so we can identify them - also don't forget to mention who the story is for, when you post it. *g* [Carol adds: include requests too smile . And if you don't want to post it yourself for some reason - yeah, don't know who might need someone else to post it for them wink /waves to Jessi/ - let me know.]

6. All stories should be posted before January 10th.

7. If your story is delayed - or if you find you won't be able to finish - you must let me know as soon as possible so we can find a pinch hitter.

8. If possible, have your story beta-read. These stories are meant as Christmas presents - the contents should be as appealing as the wrapping, I think. *g*

9. No character-bashing is allowed. Neither will deathfics. And we'll not be doing nfic either, because it would be really lame for someone to not be able to read the story written for them because they don't have access to that side of the boards...
Form:

Three things I want in my fic:
1.
2.
3.

Preferred season(s)/holiday [if applicable]:

Three things I do not want in my fic:
1.
2.
3.

I am willing to write:

I will not write:

Will I pinch hit: (meaning if someone does not complete their story or circumstances prevent them from finishing, will I volunteer to take on another story?)

I think that's everything... wink

We had 14 sign up last year - surely we can do that or more this year right?!?!

Happy Holidays!

Carol [who hopes she covered everything but is sure *someone* will let her know if she didn't...]

Just when I wanted to push the other thread up thumbsup

The form seems to have everything that's usually there. Now if I could just get enough braincells to wake up so they could actually create a collective and form a coherent thought dizzy

I've decided to take the plunge and sign up! I've never participated in a challenge before and I'm a little nervous. Please, everyone, when the time comes, be gentle with the feedback. Thanks!

I just sent in my form. My comments would closely duplicate those of IolantheAlias above.

So far everything that I've written has been my own ravings. Working on a request will be an interesting challenge.

"Interesting" is such a versatile word. smile

My MIL used to use the word "interesting" when she didn't have anything nice to say but felt the need to say something nonetheless. (i.e. My that's an interesting hat you're wearing. Did you sew it yourself?)

Sent out confirmations to everyone who has sent me one. A couple of people I sent another email to to verify usernames - just to make sure wink .

Signups officially end tomorrow night at midnight but, it'll be Thursday afternoon ET before I gets started on splitting them between me and Elisabeth so we can send out assignments Fri or Sat.

Thanks smile .

Lol, Elisabeth! wink I haven't signed up because I've been working on my Strong Medicine story and in the dark recesses of my flash drive, know there's still two L and C ones impatiently waiting me to come back to them.

I did want to say if anyone needs a beta or someone to bounce ideas off, I'd be happy to help. smile Also, if at the end of sign ups, there is an "odd" number of folcs participating, let me know and I'll join in. smile

Are you going to post the final number of participants once the sign-up is closed?

Michael, who hopes the runner's total will beat the one from the Smutathon and we already had a dozen guys there cool

I think we're up to 14 at the moment!!! WOOHOO!!!

That's officially. I haven't put mine in yet and Beth said she was going to get me one tonight and I think someone else did, too, but I can't remember who it is wink .

As I said before, signups officially end tonight, but it'll be 1pm ET or so before I get to go through them and get half sent to Elisabeth and work on getting my half back out so you really have until then. If you know you want to send one but won't have time until tomorrow night, let me know but that's about the latest we can push it and still get them out by the weekend.

Thanks all!

I just got an email from Elisabeth saying that several people emailed her this morning wanting to know how to sign up. Since I haven't heard from any of them yet, I'm going to extend sign ups until tomorrow morning at 9ishET.

I split the 20 we already have into two groups of 10 and sent half to Elisabeth to send out. I'll get mine out tomorrow sometime and she'll have hers out no later than Dec 6 as promised smile .

All right - you know who you are! Email me at carolmfolc @ gmail.com! I did clean out my PM box in case the email doesn't work - but the email would be better.

Thanks everyone! We've had a *great* response!

Fine. <glares at Jessi> I'm caving, and I'm in, too, even though I told Elisabeth earlier tonight that I wasn't going to participate.

And I really wasn't going to, considering I got totally screwed last year -- my person never did my story, without so much as a word to me.

BUT, I need to kick myself into writing mode -- I haven't done anything since September -- so here I am. I'll send in the form right now.

I've got 17 [and am cutting off sign ups momentarily - Cool girl just got in wink ]. Will be getting them out here before too long.

Last I heard Elisabeth had 12 or 13 [dunno if she's gotten any more since then] - so we *might* be at 30.

Well, I kind of think that flat out not doing the story you were assigned to do is kind of an intentional oversight, but hey, I am willing to give this a second shot. After all, the Smutathon rocked. wink

And I'm excited that so many people are participating! Should give us lots of good reading material to snuggle up with during this cold time of year! laugh

I split them 10 and 10 iirc. Elisabeth got 3 more after that and I got 7.

At least that's the last number I got from her.

If you got a confirmation email from me but not an assignment you will likely get yours from Elisabeth sometime in the 24 hours or so smile .

Hey, I got mine.......... last to join and one of the first to get assigned.

I haven't been online on these boards much lately, just an occasional peek in, but these past two days I've been popping in once in two or three hours...

And guess what? I owe it to Elisabeth. Thanks for bringing back the fun in the forum, both Elisabeth and CarolM! goofy

Oh, the NFanfic boards too seem to have been sadly neglected. Anybody wanting to revive it? I've been thinking of writing a NFic version also, of my story, if possible.

Oh, and gr8shades, hi!

But you're quite right, it did slow down again after the Smut-month and the Smutathon.

I'd love to read vignettes from you, Michael. :p

You write soooooo well, it's just that I've sadly been lacking time and will to get into longer stories right now.

I hope you don't mind when I say I haven't read either Fury or Dare past five or six parts... blush it's just that I haven't read anything that long for the past six months... including my novels!

So, start typing away! And fill the NFanfic forum with lots and lots of umm... err... stories! <What did you think I was gonna say?> wink

The rest of the assignments went out. Sorry I don't have time to make up a list for y'all but I have to scurry. If you were expecting an assignment and didn't get one, please let us know ASAP.

BTW, these will only be posted on the boards, so please let us know who you are posting for. Also include Ficathon in the title, "Ficathon: Ghost of Christmases Repeated 1/1". You are more than welcome to also post on the archives; I'm sure they would be much appreciated.

If you need a beta reader, check out the beta reader thread. If you don't normally beta but would be willing to do one just for the ficathon, post it here.

Thanks to all who are participating. Let the games begin!

Got mine too. Erm, what if I don't like it? Do I get to throw it back and have another?
I don't mean to sound bitchy, but hey, I have rampant morning sickness, so ... I personally would suggest not making statements like this because whomever has your request -- or any request tagged with a negative comment -- is going to feel bad. I mean, when I saw this, I immediately thought oh crap, she must have mine, and I bet I am not the only one who thought that.

We each had our turn to request what we wanted for our own story, and by agreeing to participate, left ourselves open to writing something that could be outside the box. That's largely what the what I will write/won't write categories are for. I think that's part of the fun, myself!

And I can honestly say some of the requirements I was assigned are challenging, but I'm up for the challenge, and I hope everyone else is, too.

I look forward to seeing all the stories!

Oh, that's why. And here I was worried the angstier stuff in Fury got to you. /wipes brow/ So, thanks for reading and I just hope you will find some more time in the future. So little time for reading sure doesn't sound like fun. Oh, and stopping with Dare 6 was probably a wise idea considering what happened in part 7 wink

Gosh, I got mine. And my first thought was, "How am I supposed to do this?" But, right now, I have a basic plotline in mind. Now to the details...

Got mine. Not sure what I was expecting, but this wasn't that. Looks like it gives me plenty of scope for creativity, though. Not that I have any ideas yet. But I'll have to wait til after the college term ends, I think.

Congrats, Jenn!! Sympathies on the morning sickness, though; I hated that part. (Quote from early in my first pregnancy: "Am I going to feel this way for the next eight months?!?" "You could, yeah" "I'm gonna die") But no matter how it feels, it's unlikely to actually kill you wink so hang in there. It'll be worth it.

But I'm really happy that it finally happened for you.

On to the subject of the Ficathon, I got mine too, and I'm looking forward to the assignment.

This should be interesting!

Better questions: When will the baby arrive? And, totally unrelated: When will the next Kerth ceremony take (web)place? goofy

Well, Kerths are April IIRC, and the nKerths should be sometime this summer. But I'm sure Dawn would consider adjusting the timeframe so it better matches up with the pregnancy blush

Yeah, but it was false labor and the baby took another two weeks to arrive. Fun, though! I think Kathy and Erin had their turns, too.

Best memory -- talking to someone & I said "I'm having a little trouble with contractions" and she said "you'd better be talking about grammar!" goofy

And yes, Jenn, I hope you get a really great fic. smile

...please let us know ASAP smile .

I know a number of people who said they wouldn't be able to get it done until *after* Christmas/New Year's and that's certainly fine, but if you don't think you're going to be able to finish yours, could you please let us know as soon as you can?

Actually, I'd appreciate it if those who got their assignments from me could let me know either way smile .

Thank you to everyone who has already posted, is going to post and has let us know you won't be able to!

Thanks, everyone!

Working on it. Already have 10 pages done (read: a third of the story from what I figure eek ) Not worried at all. Although, um, what's the policy on posting multiparters? smile1

LOL! You sound like me! I rewrote the entire beginning because I didn't like it - and I'm glad I did. It wound up working a lot better and complying with the assignment request *much* better.

Can't wait to read yours!

No rewrites so far. But I'm looking at a probable four-parter (or I'm going to do it like Iolanthe, and post two LOOOOOOONG parts). Today I broke the 10k word glass ceiling eek And if I do the ending I intend, I won't get away without a sequel help Can't those characters never shut up? razz

I too am doing some rewriting and some changes. It will about 3 parts and I am at 4000 word now.

You'll laugh, you cry, you'll probably send wildguy after me, but I will at least start posting this before the Jan 10 deadline.

Thanks again to everyone who contacted me either via the boards or privately smile .

There's only a couple I haven't heard from at all. At least one of those I've not seen hide nor hair of on the boards either.

If I haven't heard from them here pretty quick, I'll likely see if someone else can jump in at the last minute smile . If anyone would like to volunteer, please let me know.

Thanks again to everyone!!!

I am working on mine, but honestly, I don't see why we need multiple e-mail reminders -- especially people who have done ficathons here in the past. I'm sure most people are working on theirs to make a good-faith effort to get them done on time.

It kind of sucks some of the fun out of it -- for me, at least -- to have it treated it like a school assignment, and be, for lack of a better word, nagged about something that is supposed to be for enjoyment.

I can jump in, if you need me (if it's an 'easy' assignment, LOL)

and actually, I liked the reminder emails. If it weren't for them, I'd have done my usual and wait to the very last possible second to write my fic.

I did email you, Jenn, but I also wanted to say publicly [since you said it publicly] that I'm truly sorry you feel that way:(.

I was just trying to make sure everyone who worked hard on a fic for someone else got one in return and that I could find pinch hitters if needed so no one would be left out. The only people who got multiple emails from me were those people I never heard from [either here or through email].

That said, I can't wait to read what you've cooked up!

I want to say that my comment was not meant to be personal. Since I am not on Elisabeth's list, I have no clue how she handled the people she assigned stories to. My point is that once a person signs up for the ficathon -- which is voluntary -- they shouldn't need to check in.

I have never participated in a ficathon where we had to check in with the person who assigned the story, and when I co-ran the one on the nfic board, I never asked people to do that.

Posting on the board in the thread to remind the general writers that the deadline is approaching should be sufficient, especially around the holidays when people are juggling things and may not have the time to check in on whether they are working on their stories. Since we were asked when the assignments were sent out to tell you guys if we would have a problem finishing, I'd assume people would do that. It's nothing personal. I just don't appreciate seeing a post saying that my story is going to be given away because I haven't checked in -- even though I am working on it.

Jenn - Should I ever decide to try to coordinate a ficathon again, I will make certain not to send you more than the original email - however, my gut feeling is I don't need the grief of trying another one.

Intentional or not, it certainly feels personal but since you're taking it public, I will. *You* were the one who said she didn't get a fic last year. I would have thought that alone would indicate that not everyone does let the organizers know when they are unable to finish. Had you taken the time to type a quick 'I'm on it!' email response - you wouldn't have gotten anything else from me except a 'can't wait to read it'. It would have taken about ten seconds to let me know you were working on it and that would have been the end.

Yes, it's the holidays. Yes, people are busy. And that's probably why not everyone tells the coordinator/s that they won't be able to finish. I wanted to make sure no one else ended up without one like you [and possibly others] did last year or other times. Is a post on the boards enough? Maybe. But a number of the people I contacted haven't posted but maybe once or twice [I checked - and that does actually include you - there's only 3-4 posts from you but since you're a mod, I'd guess you're actually around a lot more than that] since assignments were sent out - it seems unlikely they would have seen it, but it is possible.

I'm sorry you're offended or feel nagged or like you're back in school and I've sucked the fun right out of it for you - that was not my intent and I'll be quite certain not to do that to you should I coordinate anything in the future that you choose to participate in.

Bella - I'm glad they were useful to you - thanks for offering but I think everyone on my end is covered. You might check with Elisabeth.

There is only one person I haven't heard from either publicly or privately and who hasn't posted but twice so I did ask someone else if they would mind to write that one. You know what? I hope that person gets two. I'd rather that than none - that's just the way I feel about it and why I did it.

I've said my piece, if you have anything else you'd like to say to me about it, please email me - I don't see myself responding publicly again.

Gosh, I'm still struggling with one story. In order to make it work, I had to lower an old little story of mine to PG rating, translate a 24-page-sequel I only published on the German boards so far *and* I'm currently working on the sequel to the sequel as my ficathon assignment... dizzy

Right now, I'm waiting for my beta to return the translation to me so I can start posting. Maybe I'll have to post my actual ficathon story in two small parts because it might be Sunday before I'm done, though.

Just a drive-by posting!

I am working on my fic and should be able to post it by/on the 10th. Not sure whether I'm going to have parts as of now, but either way, *something* will get put up. I had planned to be done by now, but things got sidetracked when I was asked to babysit my 4-month-old cousin for a week (overnights as well). Funny, this little guy doesn't much appreciate my desire to write wink

See ya'll real soon!

Just wanted to send a little note of encouragement saying that I've really appreciated all of the fics that have been posted so far. I feel like a real ball-dropper that mine won't be going up until the last minute. I even had my beta send me an e-mail asking if she'd missed receiving the story. Ahem... She didn't. I haven't sent it yet.

But I got off-track. I was really saying how much I enjoyed reading all of the fics. You, as a group, have raised the bar this year.

I had intended posting something to this effect earlier, but got sidetracked with something else and promptly forgot.

It's been a delight to see the resurgence in fanfic in the Fanfic folder over Christmas. This ficathon has been a large part of that, but there have been many other great stories posted, too.

And it's also been terrific to see the upswing in fdk, with many of the fdk folders rising to double figures.

So, thank you, Carol, for all of your hard work in organising this, to the authors for keeping our favourite show alive and to the readers, for encouraging them all to do more.

Kudos!

Hey, everybody.

I just wanted to let you all know that it's my fault that LaraJoelleKent's story isn't posted yet. But I've got a good reason - my cousin (to whom I'm close to) is dying and is in hospice care at her home. And that home is next door to me, so my nursing skills have been frequently requested this past week.

Oh, don't worry, Nancy, it's up. All of it. *sigh* Although peope will have to do with a few more mistakes than usual (thanks to lack of beta)... huh

Boy, am I tired by now... thud

Nancy, of course your nursing skills are more important than our entertainment any day though. Thanks for all that you do; I know it's difficult sometimes. I'm looking forward to your story, Lara, and am certain that Sapphire will love it.

I've managed to finish mine but I have no idea if it's any good... hoping I can get someone to look it over before posting, but maybe I'll just put it out as is...

I finished mine, as well, but I don't want to post it without hearing back from my beta reader. It's her first time being a beta reader and she was both excited and nervous. I would hate to blow her off at this point.

Anyway it's my fault that it's late. I was the one who got stuck on a scene.

Well, I've talked to the person I'm writing for, and she said she wouldn't mind if I waited to have it beta-ed, so I'm waiting.

It's mostly done, but trust me it can use polishing.

I know I've said so in my FDK thread already, but I felt it needed repeating:

Thanks so much to Carol and Elisabeth for setting this all up -- there have been a lot of really great stories to read (I, uh, still need to leave fdk for some, ahem) and I think it's a pretty cool thing. smile I actually had fun playing with these characters again, too.

Hope the experience hasn't put you off organizing more. Statistically speaking.... wink [oh ya, I'm a dork.]

Even though I am having some issues DSDragon's story will be posted, even if Elisabeth has to do it.
