Hey, y'all!

help

I remember reading on the message board a while back about a website that mapped out when things were invented. For instance, if you're writing a fanfic set in 1980, you can check to see if answering machines were around yet.

I've been searching on the message board looking for the thread and I couldn't find it. Does anyone know about this site?

Thanx!

take a look at this site: The History of Answering Machines .

Well, a quick net search for "invention timeline" turned up:

http://inventors.about.com/od/timelines/Timelines_of_Invention_and_Technology.htm

http://www.cbc.ca/kids/general/the-lab/history-of-invention/default.html

http://www.ideafinder.com/history/timeline.htm

http://www.answers.com/topic/timeline-of-invention

Also, interestingly:

http://www.technovelgy.com/ct/ctnlistPubDate.asp

That one gives fictional inventions by publication date. So, for example, you can see that the Time Machine was invented in 1895 in H. G. Wells's book, "The Time Machine."

And then if you click on the listing for the Time Machine, it takes you to this page , which sketches out what a Time Machine is, has a descriptive quote from the work, and sometimes, if there's a real-world analog that's been invented since the publication date (as there have been with many of Jules Verne's fictional inventions), it tells you a little bit about that.

When in doubt, think about penguins. It probably won't help, but at least it'll be fun.

Lois: Well, I like my quirks. I think they make me unique.
Clark: You certainly are unique.

Clark: You're high maintenance, you know that?
Lois: But I'm worth it!

If you are looking specifically for media-related history - I had a link for "Media History in the 1990s" posted at the end of my story "Any Time At All" - although it looks like the link is changed slightly now.

Here's the correct link:
http://www.mediahistory.umn.edu/timeline/1990-1999.html

(My author's note said it [was] "a timeline of “media history” in the 1990s. It includes historical milestones in, well, media: telephones, movies, bar codes, television, internet, cell phones, game stations, music players…

Lois had to want a Walkman because MP3 players haven’t been invented yet. <g>")

The website is the University of Minnesota's Media History Project, and the link for the entire timeline (not just 1990s) is Media History Project Timeline
