I was emailed by someone looking for the following story:

Quote
I'm trying to locale a story. HG Wells is working with Alt Superman to help various dimensions attain utopia. He hasn't found his Lois. The Alt Superman is fed-up. Wells asks him to help once more - locate Clark in an other universe. Doing his job he discovers a Alt Lois Lane with no CK. They become attached. He feels that he must return to his universe and leave her. He does find the Clark for that planet, dead. Trask did the deed. Bernie Klein was also involved in the murder to fulfil his scientific curiosity. This universe's father knew of the murder.

In the End Wells convinces Superman to stay with Lois with a Utopia in mind.
Familiar to anyone?

It's ML Thompson's Without a Superman series.

Clark Kent\'s Quest
Lois Lane\'s Quest
Superman\'s Quest

Actually, the story you're describing, Rat, is one which is no longer available - the final instalment in ChrisH's altClark series, Brave New World. In that story, the Clark of Lois's universe is dead. HG Wells sends AltClark, who hasn't been Clark for years, there with the task of finding Clark Kent. All they find is his body (Bernie Klein, who was involved in the plot that led to his death, helps them), but it turns out that Wells' real intention is for Superman to find himself.

Thanks, Wendy. I've heard back from Phil, and it was indeed Chris's story he was thinking of. smile
