The situation in which Karl has become involved is more fully written about in another story, entitled "Shell Game", so the part Karl sees is necessarily incomplete. What happens to him isn't relevant to the larger story, and if anyone wants to read it, I can post it later. Karl's part in the actual Battle of Lavirra is fairly minor, but it leads to an important point in his personal story.
