Lex Luthor speaks a number of languages,
Clark Kent speaks a number of languages,
How about at the White Orchid Ball Clark addresses Luthor from across the room in another Language. Luthor responds by coming up and talking with Clark.
Luthor tests Clark out on four or five languages and the two have a wide ranging discussion.
This all happens some minutes before Lois makes her move and in effect steals her thunder.
Indeed Luthor is deep in conversation with Clark when Lois makes her move and when Luthor heads down to meet her he draws Clark along with him.
