It shows how deeply Clark feels. He's not a lunkhead; he's conflicted. Fear v. desire. We've been awfully hard on Clark, forgetting that Lois has had the same conflict, too.
He's finally making some good choices (after a few bad ones).
Lois is making some good choices, too. She sees the conflict, despite her own grief. She's also using those God-given wiles well, too.
