He brought French cheese, Belgian chocolate, Andean snow, and a Japanese pearl.

I had assumed that he found the pearl in Japanese waters rather than that he bought it. If so, then he wouldn't necessarily know Japanese. (Although I imagine he probably does speak the language.)
