I've always been taught to use one space...Around 7th grade, my computer gasped at me one day and said, "Don't you know you're supposed to use TWO SPACES?!" But she was always a little nutty to begin with, and she never brought it up again, so I never considered it to be a big deal. I didn't hear about 2 spaces again until I joined the fanfic universe.
