I've always wondered how he got stains. If his aura supposedly protects his uniform from damage, why can it still be stained?
Maybe his aura only prevents damage to his uniform, not contact with it. So when smoke or oil sludge or whatever contacts the suit the aura also makes it very resistant to modification (cleaning) until after he takes it off.
