I was confused for a time too, Bethy. But it finally clicked. It's an optical illusion and it's really just the passenger seat and some kind of clip (maybe the seatbelt clip) combined. But if you look long enough at the part of the photo just above the steering wheel and the driver's hand it does look as though the driver is wearing a gas mask.
