Count me as among those who enjoy not only secondary characters, but also well-written original characters. Ensemble casts add dimension to stories, filling them out and adding interest. RL doesn't just revolve around me and my love interest. While I certainly wouldn't include the entire world in my story, I enjoy having a small mix of characters to interact with.
