I'm not sure those things are "fatalistic" though. He's just showing a resepct for someone's else's right to choose a course of direction that differs from what he might have chosen. He may, at times, be mistaken in his assessment of what's going on, but a fatalist he's not. At times, a lunkhead, maybe.
