English as a garden, ohhh I like that analogy.
I'd always thought about English as a wall, with the bricks as words and the mortor as grammar.
You can do it any old way with slapdash mortor and random bricks, and quite possibly the wall will stay up.
(This is my kind of English <g>)
In fact you can make a dry stone wall, and it can still stand up.
But you can make a beautifully finished wall with good bricks and good mortor, with good pointing, and the wall could last for ever.
(This wall is about 2000 years old, by the way...)
But I like the idea of a garden, gardens are all different.
And in a garden, weeds are just flowers in the wrong place.
