How is it that Zod is in charge.
The Kandorians turned against him when they found out that he had killed, I forget her name, the woman that was carrying his child.
She was not only one of their own, but she was proof that they would be able to prosper and have families. That was so sad.

Zod is a tyrant no matter where you send him -- he always finds a way to gain control or undermine the situation. How this happened gets clarified a bit in part 5.
