Been a while since we did this, and I'm curious to see how the numbers have changed in the last three years or so.

So... simple enough question. How old are you? Voting is, of course, anonymous (as always).

For comparison purposes:

51-60 5% (4)

Yes. Everyone around my age does! 5% (4)

Yes, but it doesn't work. 2% (2)

I just avoid talking about it. 14% (12)

Young at Heart - 50 plus years 11% (10)
So... let's see what we have now...

Hmm.. I wonder if anyone will check the 0-4 box..

Edit: oh, about hiding my age, I always lie about my age on the internet.. just an old habit of mine.. I also lie about my name (ok well, not about my first name) and where I live (country is ok) just for my own privacy not because I think I look old etc smile So maybe I really am 3 years old (sometimes I really think I am hyper )

28 - so I was in that 25-29 category... just barely. Whew! From here on out I guess I'll just have to lie, since I plan to remain 29 even when I'm old and wrinkled. wink

I think a lot of people do that, too, hide details. ;-)

I don't hide where I live (written under all my posts, *lol*) - I'll even tell you the company I work for (Softimage) cause I'm *very* proud to work here. But I'm not using my own name anywhere. It's definitely not Lara... (that's from a song "The eyes of Lara Moon", I didn't even invent it!) I hate my first name, I would gladly change it if I could. wink

As for my age - I like that people think I'm a silly teenager. I totally act like one in real life anyway. But I'm much older than that, so I don't usually tell. If you saw me in person, though, the grey hair (which I'm too *young* to have, btw!) kinda gives away the fact that I'm not fresh out of College. wink

(My actual real first name is Caroline and I'm an alcoolic...err... no, wait, I don't mean that! *lol* I'm 37 years old. In my head, though, my real name would probably be Lara and I'm 18 years old at the most. Oh and I would slay dragons for chocolate, too, btw.) wink

Yeah, I don't really expect anyone to check the 0-4 box, but I had to put it in just for completeness, you know?

I do know of a couple of FoLCs with young kids, some of whom seem to be budding FoLCs themselves, so... you never know.

As for me, I'm also 28. Seems to be a popular age.

Thanks to those who voted. Keep 'em coming, guys. smile

Oh, and Happy Birthday, Mrs. Mosley!

I think it makes sense that many are 28 as of the voting of this poll (I am, too smile ).

If you do the math, we were about 15 when the show first came out, and we were just babies when the first two Superman movies came out on theater. If you're a Superman fan, you would definitely become a L&C fan right away. At least that was my case. wink

How about the rest of you?

Funny, most Superman fans I know don't like L&C, and vice versa......
Posted By: SuperGEM Re: So... how old are we? - 08/22/06 08:23 PM
I'm 26 now - been an online FoLC since I was 15 (season 2 if you were wondering LOL). wink

Interesting to see that I seem to be in the most prominent age group for this board. I guess most of us grew up with L&C ... which is why it is such a big part of us! laugh

And I've been a Superman fan all my life, I can trace the actual obsession back to age 4 - which was the first time I saw Superman: The Movie. notworthy I'm pretty much a die-hard Superman fan.
Posted By: Shadow Re: So... how old are we? - 08/22/06 08:58 PM
/peeks out of the non-prominent group. :p

I'm 22. Moved up a whole age group since the first round of polls lol. Actually, I always thought L&C was particularly cool because of the amount of respect people have had for each other. I've probably been around online since I was 14, and no matter who I talked to, they didn't seem to care how young I was.

Funny, I couldn't figure out what dressing was on this sandwich I'm eating til halfway through, but that's really here nor there right now. (It was mayo.) Anyway, I don't hide my age that often, or most of the time, it doesn't come up. I don't hide my name either since it's so common, plus my friends have dubbed me with so many nicknames over the years that I hardly ever use my real name anymore.

I must have been like 9 when L&C first came out. Remember it like it was yesterday! It was the coolest thing to me since sliced bread.

I'm one of those people.. I have seen the Superman movies and they're OK I guess.. but then only half a year ago (shame on me) I started watching L&C and probably because of Dean (oh god he's cute goofy blush ) and the chemistry between him and Teri I like L&C much much more.. (and I always like series more than movies because movies are so short goofy ) and now I'm used to these actors and then I can't stand the Superman movies because there are other actors in it (kind of like the same as when you are used to watching the series in German you can't stand the English version anymore)

Edit: sorry for being so off topic but I just had to say this :p

Oooh, I'm one of 8 FoLCs in my age group. I was actually curious about this very topic and thought about starting a poll last month. So it was nifty to peek into this forum and see one already up. smile Thanks, Paul.

A fledgling seventeen- still have to think to remember it. But I've been in lurkdom since oh, about 11. I remember when I learned there was fanfic in the world. My brother was watching L&C tapes when I walked in the room. When I kept begging him to find more tapes for me, he told me that people wrote something called fanfic on favorite tv shows and movies. laugh
Posted By: Crazy_Babe Re: So... how old are we? - 08/24/06 07:17 AM
I'm 23 in Novemeber. I've never worried about being old since I sit in the middle to in terms of my friends some older than me and some younger. I think it doesn't matter how old you are it's what in the heart that counts. As for watching L&C I was around 8 or 9 when it first aired and of course about 13 or 14 when it ended. I only discovered the fanfic sites by chance when I first got the Internet, I did a random search wondering if I could find any information o L&C it amazed me that most of my friends weren't huge fans of the so (I still get Clark belongs with Lana stuff because my friends only real connection to the whole Superman story is through watching Smallville, but I've grown tired of telling them that from the very beginning of the re-vamp of the comics as well as the airing of Lois and Clark that it's L&C that belong together and NOT Clark and Lana). I was so happy to find out that worldwide there were people who loved L&C as much as I did. Since there was no real re-run of the show here on free to air TV, I had to wait (im)patiently for 10 years to have it on DVD all the while watching what was left of my tapes of S3 and hoping that they would hold out. Lucky for me S1 and S2 came out on DVD by the time my last move caused me to lose what was left of my S3 eps on tape. Thank goodness that we'll have all 4 seasons by the end of the year. smile

All these twenty-somethings - I'm starting to feel old... change mine to read "28" instead. That's about how old I actually feel. Although there are some who would argue you could shave another fifteen years off that figure and have how old I act. :p

I almost voted for my 4 year old--we've been watching s1-s3 almost night (1 ep/night); and she's constantly asking for Superman. Although the glasses never fooled her!

Well, officially I'm a senior citizen, but I've never felt like one. I was 58 on my last birthday. This year I went to Hawaii, went snuba diving (that's a combo of scuba and snorkeling) parasailed, hiked up a volcano, flew over Pele's Fountain in a small plane and attended two luaus. I still have the intention of fulfilling a childhood dream of learning to waterski. I've been a lifeguard, have a green belt in Ju jitsu (that's judo before they cleaned it up and made it into a sport) and can take a fall with the best of them. I also married my ju jitsu instructor and have been happily married to him for 33 years. I work out at the gym whenever I can squeeze in the time, and am still working on my two fanfics when I can manage it -- all in between caring for a mother with alzheimers. I've had to slow down on my other activities because of that, but I haven't stopped them. If I did, I'd have to stop living, and that is something I refuse to do.

At what point do you officially become an adult? Don't ask me. I haven't gotten there yet. I'll let you know if I ever do.

I laughed at this, Sue, because I'll be 37 this fall, and while traveling with my parents this past week, I had to ask my Mom how old I was going to be - and then SHE had to do the math to figure it out! I was pretty sure it was either 37 or 38, but really, it quit mattering a few years ago.

I noticed this as well but don't know the answer. I'm busy raising a young family but still find time to scribble here and there, and I've had many fandom friends in my own age range. However, one of the things I've always enjoyed about fandom is that I encounter such a diverse group of people - people I'd never cross paths with in real life. My RL friends are wonderful and I love them dearly, but they tend to be pretty much in the same place in life that I am. It's such fun to meet people who are older or younger or from other countries or with completely different backgrounds. It's one of fandom's greatest attractions for me.

Love polls like these!

I find it odd that so many people like LnC and not Superman. What ever drew you to LnC in the first place?

Well, I guess I must be one of the odd ones because I've been a Supes fan since I was a little girl! I'm a fan of the comics and I have watched all the various TV series although I gotta say The Superboy series was just totally bizarre.

I will say that while the Superman movies were fantastic because they brought Superman to the big screen, I always hated the dorky Clark because he never was that dorky in the comics or The Adventures of Superman (George Reeves).

I'll also admit that I was pretty upset when Dean Cain was cast as Clark Kent because he didn't 'look' like Clark Kent / Superman. But his charm and sweetness and sexiness won me over. In my mind though, Superman will always have pretty blue eyes.

And it seems I'm old enough to be DJ's mom - yikes!! And most of the rest of y'all's mom for that matter.... I'm 47.

I guess I'm lucky though - very few gray hairs!!

Well, Yvonne, I guess when we get older we don't really care as much, eh? I used to hide my real name, my town, my age etc. And because of that after taking a break from the boards, I don't remember who I used to be. Wait, maybe I still don't remember who I am....

Amen, Crazy_Babe, I put in another post somewhere if they don't get Lois and Clark together before the end of that show (Smallville), I may have to choke a producer. Some producers they are - they didn't even know Annette What's Her Name (Martha Kent) played Lana in Superman 3 (Sorry, I can't remember her last name) until she told them. And Crazy_Babe, you are so funny - I've got tapes older than you... (and they work)

When I first found this site, there wasn't any Google....

I keep hoping maybe the Sci-Fi station here will pick up LnC.

I've only Googled myself once and I found a great, great dead aunt... does that count?
Posted By: alcyone Re: So... how old are we? - 08/29/06 12:33 PM
It seemed to me that many people cited the simplicity of the Superman character (as just Superman not Clark Kent-as Superman)as the main factor in their not liking Superman. I personally have no problem liking both, I don't necessary feel that I have to subscribe to the prevalent view of Superman in the movies. In fact, I think they're more ambiguous than people give them credit for. In Superman II one of the more heartwarming scenes for me is when Superman takes Lois to the Fortress of Solitude and she says "Wow so this is where you live" and he replied, "No, actually I live three blocks from you."

I turned 20 in May, and yet I still think I'm 18. Though, that is slowly changing. I just started my Junior year of college so the added responsibility is helping me feel a little closer to 19! wink

I've been a fan of L&C since I was 7. My parents watched the show and us kids sat down with them. It was one of my favorite family activities. Of course, once season 4 began airing, my parents stopped allowing us to watch it. The kissing got to be a bit much for kids, in their opinion. goofy I was so excited when I found out L&C was coming out on DVD. Now, when I watch it, it feels like coming home. I remember all the times I watched it while leaning against my Mom and Dad's legs.

I'm looking forward to season 4. I'm old enough to watch it, now! laugh

Ah, Foxy-J, that's so sweet. It reminds me of watching Batman as a kid. Then I watched as an adult and noticed all that sexual innuendo. I imagine you have noticed the same with LnC.

I startet watching the series at the age of 9, because I loved the movies especially the second smile1 but I hated the fact that Clark made Lois forget all smile1

Not much laugh Before getting hooked on L&C, I had enjoyed the Superman movies, and I was broadly familiar with the canon, but I didn't much care. My husband was a Superman fan, and *he's* the one who started watching L&C. I just rolled my eyes and did other things. Then I accidentally saw the last third or so of "Tempus Fugitive" and was totally hooked. Romance? Revelation?? Count me in for that...

These days, I don't like "Superman" in general. The movies annoy me -- I used to like Superman II, but now it drives me nuts. Okay, so Lois is in love with Superman and can barely stand Clark. So when she finds out they're the same... he turns into Clark full time? goofy If you dress up the Kerths or Season 6 the right way, it looks like a pretty cool achievement.

Try turning 40 in 3 months!!!

But for now I am firmly holding onto that 34-39 bracket.

As for age... I'm between 40-45... but I can usually only figure out the exact year by using my fingers and working out the dates.
I stopped counting around 40 - I don't feel around 40, still feel around 29. Or even younger, Stuart tells me quite often laugh - to the extent that when someone asks me how old I am I have to do the same as ML. "Um...let's think...'61...'71..."

I'm somewhere between 20 and...82. What? It's not *that* long until it happens... turning yet another year in two weeks. Oy...

33 and hanging onto it for the next month. I remember when I started teaching that I would laugh at my 14 year old students when they called me mom ("Yeah, right, if I had you when I was 10!") Ughh...now I really could be!

I occassionally google myself to see if my students are writing nasty things about me on myspace. smile I used my real name in my fanfic, but my name is so common that it's almost more impersonal than my nick (googling Susan Young didn't get any fanfic hits, but googling groobie found one of my stories, plus a post to my favorite band's message board). According to google, I could be a motivational speaker, a doctor, a professor of economics, or an "actress" who's greatest claim to fame is her role in "Porn in the USA". laugh

I googled myself and found a nurse who does therapeutic massage. I thought that was really funny (and just a tad bit scary) because I'm a nurse, too. I just don't do the massage... Haha!! To top that off, she lives less than 150 miles away from me! Ouch!

I've never googled myself, but I went out last month with a co-worker who told me that he had googled my name. He said he found mention of me in some boring on-line medical publications (several years ago I built a cancer reporting program that's still in use). I was thrilled to be mentioned in the journals but really creeped out that he was googling me (it was all in the way he told me about it). Needless to say, we haven't had a second date. It just seemed so... invasive, you know?

Now I'm *really* glad I use a pen name to write under. I used to use my maiden name but now I just use the initial "S". I would freak twice and die if anyone I worked with knew what I write about in my spare time. blush

Heh. I turned eightee- *coughhacksnorthackhackcough* thirteen. Yeah. I turned thirteen this summer. Yep, yep. What do you mean with 'I'm in denial'?! I'm not eighteen! That would mean that I'm an adult. And I'm not! Nope, nope, nope...

Urm. I Google EVERYONE. Especially anyone I might be considering dating!

Not that I'd bring it up on a first date. huh

I'm 23, and I've been Googled before too, but hadn't even thought of the possibility of coming up on a Google search at all before that time. Although it makes sense, considering I've been active in two other fandoms before this and had multiple websites that I never updated after the first few months.

I'll come up if you Google me. :p

I did a lot of volunteer work in college, and you'll find my website by typing in my name. My biggest fear is that my closet fanfic addiction will come up one of these days LOL, but so far so good.

For a long time about 50% of the hits on my name on the first couple of Google pages were me, the rest were an American lawyer. I suspect that he retired or something because after that most of the hits were me, and a couple were the production designer for Shaun of the Dead and some other films, also a Londoner. This led to at least one case of mistaken identity - I had a very confusing call from someone who wanted to "do lunch" and I think wanted to set up some sort of film deal, who must have gone away thinking the other one was an idiot.

Right now it's all me on the first three pages apart from one hit on a British lawyer who is fortunately not from London, after that more lawyers and the film guy start creeping in.

Posted By: MrsMosley Re: So... how old are we? - 10/25/06 09:33 AM
If you Google me under my married name, you come up with different, very well known, Elisabeth-with-an-S who wrote about death and dying. We don't have the same last name but it is very similar and a lot of people think (incorrectly) that it is spelled the way I spell my last name.

My maiden name will bring up a lot of genealogy stuff. I am very interested in the subject now but I was really into it in college and so my name appears on message boards and forums all over the place. Genealogy is a subject where you really have to use your own name, otherwise you kind of miss the point! smile

(and I am still 27!)

That reminds me of a line in the film "Yours, Mine, and Ours" -- the coast guard captain ran into his high school sweetheart, and wanted to find out what she was doing these days -- especially if she were married. He mentioned to his buddy that he'd done some online searching. The buddy, scandalized, asked, "You googled another man's wife?!?" goofy

Ah, Foxy-J, that's so sweet. It reminds me of watching Batman as a kid. Then I watched as an adult and noticed all that sexual innuendo. I imagine you have noticed the same with LnC.
I watched when I was younger (though I had the benefit of not having my parents around and if they were they didn't understand). My mum was with me when VD aired and paid no particular attention. Personally the stuff on L&C is a lot tamer than what is on the air now. I got S3 and S4 last week now I have to wait for the American release to be delivered to the store and my collection will be complete and that'll be my birthday present for this year! (Just 8 more days till my 23rd birthday!) smile cool

ROTFL. I am so in denial, too. I turned 18 exactly two months ago and I still sometimes forget I'm not 17 anymore.

I say we start lying about our age. goofy

I turn 40 in one month (Dec. 12), so I could have waited another month to check the next category. But then I wouldn't be able to change the next poll for another five years. wink

I like Superman in almost all of its incarnations having grown up on the George Reeves series, watched Justice League cartoons, Superman and Superboy cartoons, L&C, and even Smallville (though I don't particularly like the first three seasons). I also liked the new Superman Returns movie, though Brandon and Kate are too young-looking to have had that kind of history.

LOL!!!

I'm 19, but I'm still convinced I'm 12. Ah well... wink

What drew me to Lois & Clark? Their relationship and how "normal" the show felt to me. Plus a vague feeling that I've seen it before. Which I had. I was 6 when the show premiered and I remember hiding under a table when my parents watched the show...

That's a big hunk of years. Thanks for making it 4 year increments, Paul.
Well, so far I'm older than everyone who had posted.

I remember watching L&C...I must have been about 10 when it started. Good times...good times. laugh

18 and ten months.

Just a note on googling myself. I found some people with the same first&last name that are:

1. a Florida high school quarterback with the nick woodsy.
2. a U.S. Dept. of Commerce Petition Attorney
3. A manager of post-secondary education, training, and labor for the government of New Brunswick.
4. an author of publications for something called DBLP. another website shows this one to be working for the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland.
5. married to a Yettey Merioneth with 4 kids.

You can tell I've been busy.

Also, while including my middle name in the search, I found a genealogy or something for a guy named (my first name) Doran-Wood. My sister's nick online is doranwen. It cracked me up.

I'm twenty in June. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Part of me feels like I'm still going on fourteen, and the other part feels I should be 25 by now.

However, I'm absolutely shocked at how many people we have in our midst who won't have access to nfic for a couple more years. I feel for you! *sniffle*

Hm...The younger set is rocking! That's really cool that there are so many FOLCs that are in their late teens and twenties.

Me? I'm 42, and I'll happily tell anyone my age if I can remember it. Usually I'm focused on something else and my answer is something like "Um..I don't know, somewhere above 40, now can we get back to the topic at hand?" Does that count as lying about my age? I just don't want to count right then and figure it out.

Whatever. I'm so weird.

How old am I? Well let's see I stop counting when I had my son at age 25 and that was 8 years ago, almost 9 years ago. Oh heck that's too confusing. I was born Sept. 1, 1972. If you want to know how old I am, do the math yourself. Math gives me a headache. Oh wait, I'm 34 -- I think. confused

I'm 26. I've been a Superman fan all my life. When LnC first aired I think I was 13. I was jumping for joy when the show came out, although due to circumstances, I didn't get to see very many episodes as they aired. I saw most of the series by watching reruns.

Of course, once season 4 began airing, my parents stopped allowing us to watch it.
HeHe...I'm 25 and the same thing happened to me. I was so excited when season 4 came out on DVD and I finally got to see it. Actually, looking back on the show and remembering how picky my parents were about what my sister and I watched, I am surprised they let us watch it at all! I guess they figured most of it went over our heads (which it did).
